Michael Durso was appointed to fill the vacant BOE seat.

Michael Durso, 66, was sworn in as the representative for District Five on the Montgomery County Board of Education at a ceremony held today, according to a Montgomery County government press release. Durso was appointed by the BOE to fill the seat vacated by Nancy Navarro, who was elected to the Montgomery County Council in May, and will serve the remainder of her term, which ends Nov. 30, 2010. Durso was chosen by the board from among 19 potential candidates by a unanimous vote of 7-0.

Two six-car Red Line Metro trains collided at 5 p.m. on Monday evening at the height of rush hour, resulting in nine fatalities, including a female train operator. At least 100 passengers sustained injuries in what transportation officials reported as the deadliest accident in Metro's 33-year history.
