Silver Chips won the 1993, 1996. 1999, 2000, and 2001 "Marylander" awards for best high school newspaper in the state.

Journalism teacher and Chips advisor John Mathwin was honored by Chidren's National Medical Center(CNMC). He was given an Award of Special Accomplishment, which recognized his "continued excellence" in journalism for fifteen years of first place awards by Chips writers in the CNMC Teen Health Writing Contest. Starting with next year's contest, first place student winners will receive an award called the "Mathwin Award."
