If you find you need a break from studying for exams during this long weekend, you have a chance to see a movie and learn about volunteer opportunities on the National Day of Service on Jan. 18. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the American Film Institute (AFI) will present a free showing of "King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery to Memphis" at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. The movie includes documentary footage of Martin Luther King Jr. and other important events. Following the release, each audience member will have a chance to talk to representatives from local non-profit groups to learn about service opportunities in the area. Tickets will be available at 10:30 am on Sunday. There is a limit of four tickets per person. It may be the weekend before exam week, but this screening is an excellent opportunity to learn about SSL opportunities. For more information on the movie showings, dial 301-495-6720. The AFI Silver Theater is located close to the Silver Spring Metro Station.

A universal rule when it comes to gift giving: one can never go wrong with a handmade holiday craft. Blazers hunting for a thoughtful gift for a friend, relative or teacher should head down to the Holiday Shop-N-Stroll this Saturday in Downtown Silver Spring. Fenton Street, just a walk away from the Silver Spring metro stop, will be transformed into a festive bazaar as crafters from Handmade Mart and FRESHFARM Market vendors gather to provide shopping scavengers with a diverse selection holiday treasures. No doubt, one can find a charming, unique gift that will please even the Grinch-iest of people. Attendees will also be able to embrace a warm atmosphere in the chilly weather, as there will be Christmas carolers and activities such as ornament-making that any age can enjoy. The extravaganza will continue to the evening, when there will be a Christmas tree lighting, sure to let all feel holiday magic. For a day of thorough festive enjoyment, spend the day at Shop-N-Stroll with a group of friends or family – just be sure to not let them see that special gift you will be purchasing for them!
Jazz Academy (Aug 1, 2009)
The Jazz Academy of Music will be performing on Friday night in Downtown Silver Spring from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Negril Located near the corner of Fenton and Georgia just a few minutes walk from the Silver Spring Metro station, this Jamaican carryout restaurant is a wonderful option for lunch or a quick dinner. The menu ranges from traditional Jamaican patties to curry chicken and sweet pastries. The patties come in chicken, beef or vegetable-flavored with hot spices and wrapped in dough, they serve as a tasty snack or appetizer. Depending on your appetite, you can choose from full dinners of jerk and curry chicken that comes with rice and beans or jerk sandwiches. Negril is a relatively inexpensive and interesting alternative to the chain restaurants in Silver Spring. Champion Billiards Located on Georgia Avenue a few blocks from the Metro, this seemingly hole in the wall is a fun place to spend an afternoon or evening with your friends playing pool. The atmosphere feels like you stepped back into a 70s pool hall, but for a pretty low hourly rate based on the number of players, you can have a few games of pool. Champion Billiards offers an alternative to the monotony of the usual entertainment of movies and putt-putt golfing. CD-Game Exchange Once you have shopped at CD-Game Exchange, you will never return again to the chain music store in the local mall with marked up prices and little selection. CD-Game Exchanged has managed to pack a large selection of music into their small store, ranging from hip-hop to rock to jazz. The store features new albums and used CDs, videos and video games. Used CDs are a great way to find affordable and interesting music. You can also bring in any old CDs, tapes, records and videos to sell. Information compiled by Erik Kojola.
