Walking into a Blair classroom is hardly aesthetically pleasing unless that classroom happened to be room 371, and it happened to be after school on any day but Thursday. Then, the opaque concrete walls and lackluster fluorescent lighting are overtaken by a dazzling medium of expression: fashion.

Fashion club is much more than lighting up a room, though. The club is working towards a fashion show in November. Both girls and boys of the club perfect their unique catwalk, practice shaping their eyes and lips for their desired look and collectively design outfits. The atmosphere is worry-free and everyone is working for the greater goal. "You don't have to worry about the rest of the people making fun of you," senior Shawnice Burke says. "No one is criticized. Just helped."

This club isn't for the half-hearted, though. Practices, held four times a week, usually go over two hours; members spend a lot of time making sure that everything looks perfect. For the upcoming show, the club designs clothing under different themes described as "scenes." This year, featured scenes include a crime scene, lab scene, money scene and a "Bonnie and Clyde" scene, among others.

And as most shoppers know, designer clothing carries hefty price tags. To compensate, the club raises money through fundraisers such as pizza sales after school, and, sometimes, successfully pleads for discounts from stores. "Practice and dedication," Burke sums up.
