From painting the outdoor trashcans to crafting the SAC mural, the Fine Arts Club accomplishes every artistic project there is at Blair. The club is a part of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS), which is designed to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability in art.
Founded in 2002, the club has revealed the talents of its students throughout the years. "One of our students was involved in an art exhibit at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center two years ago," says club sponsor Janet Berry. "It was recorded and broadcasted on television."
Members of NAHS are eligible for numerous awards, such as the Rising Star Secondary Recognition Award and the Charles M. Robertson Memorial Scholarship to Pratt's School of Art and Design in New York.
But talent is by no means a requisite to join; an interest in art is all that is needed. "You don't even have to be enrolled in an art class," club president Debattama Sen says.
This year, the Fine Arts Club has a handful of plans for Blair. They are planning to paint the press box, create a mural in the P.E. hallway and expand the current mural all the way to the SAC, Berry says. She also plans to update the artwork that is currently on the walls in the administrative offices.
Members may also choose to participate in a painting contest sponsored by John Hopkins University, where they will paint a 30-inch by 40-inch canvas which may be selected for exhibition at the university, Berry says.
Sen has high hopes for the club this year. "This year we have big plans," she says.
