They're responsible for the Blair mascot. They're responsible for the school's liveliness. They're responsible for the school spirit. They're the Spirit Club.

Founded by club sponsor Susan Madden in 1996, the Spirit Club follows one central dogma. "Our goal is to promote school spirit," Madden says. Spirit club is most active during spirit weeks, which lead up to homecoming and pep rallies, says Madden. They also create posters for school events and greatly contribute to the school's decorations.

For the past few years, Spirit Club has been selling Blair merchandise to raise school spirit. Items they sell include cowbells, shaker poms, Blazer beads and megaphones. But the most popular of them all are the tattoos. "Tattoo selling has seriously been the hottest thing since 1996," Madden says. The profits are used to purchase more merchandise for the next spirit week. "It's a cycle that never ends," Madden adds.

This year, Madden has several new plans and ideas in stock. "We're looking for something different to sell now," Madden says. "We also need to get a new mascot." For homecoming, she wants the press box under the stadium bleachers to be painted.

One former tradition she wishes to revive is "Give a Blazer a Hug Day." "We would give an athlete a hug if he or she was wearing a jersey. But soon enough, everyone wanted a hug," Madden chuckles. "It was pretty fun. I think I'm going to try to bring it back."

Madden encourages anyone interested to join. "I would like to know what people's idea of school spirit is."
