When asked to describe the goal of the Young Democrats, sponsor Lansing Freeman responds, "Politics, like life, is not a spectator sport." To reflect this ideology, the Young Democrats engage in political discussion and debates, as well as celebrate legislative Democratic successes.
"It's exciting to see how students can affect the community by spreading the knowledge of democratic and even basic legislative ideologies," president and junior Lindsay Brewer said.
A group of about 20 students from various grades, the Young Democrats typically meet every Wednesday to organize and plan their next event. Over the past few years, the club has become increasingly involved in the Blair community with projects that promote political awareness and action.
This past year, members of the Young Democrats registered over 100 Blair students to vote in both the Maryland primary and general elections. The club also held a mock Blair primary election where all students were allowed to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice. The club then tallied up the results, and announced "Blair's president" as Barack Obama.
The Young Democrats also sometimes ask various politicians to come and talk with the group on various political issues. "Just attending the club once a week is a great opportunity to become much more aware of the political process and some of the legislative events that constantly occur around us," Brewer said.
As the Young Democrats start to plan their next event, they encourage anyone from all backgrounds and grades to come and join the group. "We promise it will be an unforgettable experience," Brewer says. "One that you will learn something new each and every time you attend."
If interested in joining Young Democrats, please contact Lansing Freeman in the social studies office or junior Lindsay Brewer.
