After five studio albums, Counting Crows have morphed from solely a folk rock group to a folk group and a rock group, both of which are not done well. Their latest album, "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings," is not a clean mix of the two genres but rather a compilation of each genre separately. New to the purified scene, Counting Crows created "1492" as an attempt to exhibit their fluency in the genre. Although the introduction to the song has a great beat, the track never reveals a truly memorable rift. Each verse relies on rising action to build up anticipation which is never climaxed but instead only decreases slowly in each chorus. The forceful smoothing of rough edges may work in classical music, but the technique is definitely unsuitable for the rock genre. The Counting Crows should regress back into their specialty – folk rock.
