Senior to play in Maryland State boys' tennis tournament

by Mandy Xu, News and Entertainment editor
On May 28 - 29, senior Dukyoung Park, Blair's boys’ tennis team co-captain, will play for the state champion tennis title at the University of Maryland. As a representative of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), Park will compete against 23 other students, each representing one of Maryland's counties.

Park will play in the preliminary round on May 28. If he wins, he will compete in the semi-finals and finals on May 29.

In order to compete in the state tournament, Park had to place first in the regional competition. "The regional winner represents Montgomery County," Blair tennis coach David Ngbea said.

According to Ngbea, Montgomery County players frequently perform well at the state tournament; a player from Winston Churchill High School was the champion in 2009. "Traditionally, Montgomery County has been strong on the state level," he said. Ngbea is optimistic about Park’s performance in the state tournament. "I think he will do very well," he said.

Before the regional tournament Park participated in the county playoff tournament, where he finished second after losing the final match against Wootton player Anton Kovrigin. Although counties are not involved in advancing to states, Ngbea feels the match aptly demonstrated Park’s ability. "Anton was a nationally ranked player," Ngbea said. "I always told [Park] that he was a very strong player."

Park played the number one singles position during the regular season with a season record of 10-1, according to Ngbea.
