SilverStyle: Anything but flip flops

by Aanchal Johri, Online Editor-in-Chief
As the old saying goes, "You don't know someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes." But we all know that it should really say, "You don't know someone until you've seen their shoes." As summer begins, we have done away with Ugg boots and moccasins and are bringing out the open-toed sandals. So take a moment to see what your shoes say about you.

Flats

Multi-purposeful and versatile, these shoes can be worn when you are on-the-go in jeans, picnicking in a pastel summer frock or hitting the dance floor in a vibrant cocktail dress.

Cloth based flats are softer and livelier and often come with bows or delicate floral patterns. These should be worn sparingly as they tend to wear and tear over long-distance use. On the other hand, hard-shelled flats can be paired with more formal attire and are considerably more durable, but beware of the shiny plastic flats that are incessantly tacky and pinch your pinky toes.

Cork-Wedged Heels

Notable for their bright colors and exclusive patterns, these heels are for the quirky and abstract. Although wedges can be spotted all year round, the cork-based heels are unique to the warmer seasons because they remind you of the outdoors. Most come with a peak-toe opening in the front, making them a little more fun.

You can be safe and opt for a solid-colored style but one of the most popular patterns is the strawberry cupcake style: a cork base with bright red straps and polka dots. Unlike like with flats or other kinds of shoes, don't hesitate to pair up the heels with a summer outfit that doesn't quite match – doing so is just what they’re made for!

Gladiators

Just as their name suggests, these shoes are worn by the bold and the brave. They are inspired by European designs and rose in popularity around 2008. Most go for the dark metallic bronze or gold colored ones, but if you're looking for something different, try black studded ones with straps that tie above the ankle. For a more casual or sober take, solid white or tan leathered ones will do the job. These may be the more flexible type of shoe, as they can be matched with most of your summer wardrobe and their leather frame makes them sturdy and comfortable. And a quick SilverStyle tip: if your toes aren't done, do us all a favor and refrain from open-toed shoes.

As you prep for the summer, give your feet some room to breathe. Lose the sneakers and save your flip-flops for the beach—the possibilities are endless!

Flip-Flops, Flat T-Strap Sandals and High Heel Sandals are my go to shoes from early April till Late October/Early November. The Flip-Flops (60%) are for almost everywhere. The nicer Flat T-Strap Sandals (20%) are for a night out with the girls and the High Heel Sandals (20%)are for seducing men. Any other time of the year its sneakers because nobody cares what outfit and shoes you wear in the winter. Plus in the winter I run a lot more to stay warm. Uggs are ugly and I only have one high heel boot and one closed toe high heel for formal winter events. But all in all my spring/summer/fall daytime shoe is the flip-flop

Ok, because sneakers do not get the love they deserve, here is a list of three reasons to wear them:
    1. Pragmatism is sexy.
    2. Save your soles (pun completely intended).
    3. If you need to be somewhere quickly, you can do so without injury.*
*added bonus: if you run a lot, certain muscles will further develop and improve your physique
