Vikings are getting disgruntled, Blazer style

by KC Costanzo, Page Editor
This humor piece is a response to the article Vikings are going down, Blazer style and the comments that followed it.

First off, let me say this: Wow.

The reason I type this statement of surprise is twofold --

One: I had no idea it was possible for a story to get this many comments.

Two: I can't believe Blair and Whitman are, judging from the responses on this page, made up almost completely of four and five year olds.

Guys, this is a dumb argument to put it bluntly and simply. I was a tad thrown that so many Whitman students (I'm assuming here that it’s more than one and not just the same person posting over and over) were so offended by this article. Sure he pokes fun at your school and throws out a couple stats you may not like, but I mean come on, it's not that serious.

That being said, I do think some aspects of Ben’s article were a bit over-the-top so I can understand why there was a little resentment.

I'd also like to say to people like "JM": grow up or at least stop commenting. You're making your school look bad. Tape your fingers together if you have to or remove the keyboard from the computer. I have no problems with Whitman, just the people representing it in the comments section.

Comments like this are what really got me: "[A]s a Whitman student, let me apologize for having smart, hard-working parents. Next allow me to apologize for the fact that Whitman has better athletes and a better newspaper."

It's interesting that you should point out your parents are hard working. The way you presented that comment was, I'd say, a pretty clear jab at the people of Blair. The parents of Blair students work at least as hard as Whitman's and in some cases harder. Consider that Blair is made up mostly of minority students. Consider that racism does still exist even in liberal areas such as our own. Put two and two together and you realize that the average Blair parent probably has to work harder than the average Whitman parent to get jobs and maintain them. This isn’t meant as criticism of Whitman parents so don’t have a fit kids. My family’s white so we have just as easy as the majority of Whitman families and 30% of Blair.

As to the second half of the comment reposted above, I won’t comment because I don’t think bragging about a newspaper you work for is very professional. However I will say that our Online staff is the best so BOOYA!

Woops. Sorry folks, I meant to say that we’re a very humble bunch.

I’m sure there were plenty of stupid posts by Blair students as well so don’t come crying because I didn’t complain about any of them. The fact is, I really couldn’t be bothered to go back and read the same regurgitated slurs and jibes over and over again.

If you’re like me in that respect, I’ve prepared a quick summary of nearly every post on this board that I’ve glanced at:

Posted by: Clever Name that Either Pokes Fun at the Opposing School or Boasts about My School Pride :: 12/20/2002

I was terribly offended by (that last clearly uninformed post/this terrible article). Because the views of one person clearly represent your entire school, I find it necessary to reply in kind. (Blair/Whitman) is the worst school ever and (Whitman/Blair) is far superior. We have better sports teams that could kick your team’s butt any day of the week or year. Your school newspaper is made up of eggheads who don’t rite grammar good or make sentences that sound well. I will now write a bunch of random “facts" that “justify" my stated opinion. (“Facts" declared) Now I will take random “words" from other posts and “put them" in “quotes" to show I know what I’m talking “about." Let me finish up by taking a final cheap shot at (Blair/Whitman) followed by a couple more words in “quotes."

Of course there were a couple exceptions to this general summary such as Izaak’s comment (Izaak, man! You’re supposed to talk about how bad the other school is, dude!), but these exceptions are few and far between.

At any rate, I’ve already taken up enough space so let me finish up by saying that Whitman is made up of egotistical maniacs and now I have to go eat “lunch."

It's interesting that Blair got the exact response they wanted from this article, and now they have started the rivalry they were looking for. So congratulations to Blair.

I am a Whitman student. And a journalism student. And I thought Ben's article was very good and amusing, accept for his last line which I tohught was a little over the top (when he called Whitman snooty, rich vermon). Ben brings up good points in similarites of Whitman and Blair, and gives valid reasons why the two schools should be heated rivals. The one thing that offended me was Ben's constant blows about Whitman's overwhelming white population and the fact that we are in a rich neigboorhood. Come on, now...That's not original. Of course I disagree with most of the facts in Ben's opinion, but he is entilted to his opinion.
And on that note, good luck in the eight final sporting contests, which of course you will loose.

Haha. By writing this article you are being a complete hypocrite. Maybe if you had shown a little respect to your fellow MCPS school then you wouldn't have gotten so many hateful remarks. Well done guys, cause you asked for it. As a Whitman student I am not gonna let my name be trampled by a couple of kids with a computer.

Although you said you recieved many comments, I couldn't actually find them anywhere... I thought that would kind of defeat the purpose of a discussion board or maybe your comments section is just a fun little facade for your newspaper to prove they are not afraid of some reader's reactions. Also, I was wondering how an article could have managed to be placed online without anyone noticing that maybe you were being a tad judgemental. The other thing - I cannot believe of all the schools in the county you would try and play the minority card on Whitman. It is almost like you were saying, "Because we have minorities that is why we don't have a better (insert whatever team you think is worse then Whitman's)." I am also curious to know how you reconcile the fact that the majority of your "minority population" is not in your prized magnet program. Well at least Trent Lott would be proud :) I am just kidding - it just is annoying that even after your quasi-retraction was published you still didn't allow any of your readers to view other people's opinion on your attempt to malign Whitman

Student, I was reffering to the comments received on Ben's story not on my own. So far every comment pertaining to my respnse except one has been posted.

    Merry Christmas.

You guys are poor? Last time i was at your school, the campus was enormous! the only thing wrong with it is all the wanna be ghetto kids running around. you give yourself that "poor, ghetto" look, not us.
  • Caitlin Horn (View Email) on December 22, 2002
KC- You make some really good points. I was couldn't believe all the postings by Whitman students who claim to be offended by Ben's sweeping generalizations, but can't resist adding "We're smarter/cooler/better than you anyway," or who criticize Ben for making median income an issue, then say "Maybe it's because our parents work harder than yours do."

Whitman had the opporunity to take the high road, and not every student took it. But neither did Blair students who used Ben's column as an excuse to make some pretty offensive allegations of racism and elitism. After reading the personal note Ben sent to a Whitman student explaining his article, I understand better what he was trying to do by writing the column, and I don't think he meant his comments to be as insulting as Whitman kids interpreted them to be. I'm not defending what he wrote by any means-- just because he passed off what he wrote as a "humor column" doesn't mean he can get away with saying whatever he wants. As editor of Whitman's paper, I would hope that our staff wouldn't run an opinion piece that makes personal attacks on another school's students. But at the same time, I know that the Black & White has made its share of mistakes, and run some stories it shouldn't have. Even though I consider this article a lapse in judgment, it won't permanently change my views of Silver Chips or Blair students. Prejudiced, snobby students exist at both schools-- and that has nothing to do with diversity or median income.

I respect Ben's attempt to boost school spirit, but socioeconomic status and minority representation should have nothing to do with the Blair-Whitman competition. Instead of making this a battle of opposites--rich/poor, homogeneous/diverse, whatever-- consider for a moment how similar we are. Our schools both have excellent sports teams, strong musical programs, respected newspapers. That sounds like plenty to fuel a rivalry to me.

woooowww.. i didn't think it was possible, but Blair has done it again. seriously, are you out of your mind? writing this article in response to the chaos- then actually creating MORE? you must be in 3rd grade, saying everyone is 4-5 yrs old. just for the record...check your grammar buddy. you're shaming your school and its newspaper.
  • blazer on December 27, 2002
    "um" person,
I thought you Whitman people are academically advanced enough to realize that you can use a grammar error to prove a point.

It's obvious what KC was implying when he wrote "who don’t rite grammar good."
  • KC Costanzo on December 29, 2002
To "um": refer to my post below. The parts you misunderstood were jokes.
  • ben austin docampo (View Email) on December 29, 2002
congratulations to KC for being a comic God. Well done, my friend, well done.

  • KC Costanzo on December 30, 2002
Jokes aren't as funny when you have to explain them, but I'm going to do just that because some Whitman kids don't seem to be catching on here.

The summary said at the end that comments all ended with a cheap shot and something in quotes. Thus I ended my article with a cheap shot and something in quotes. That's the joke.
  • blazer on December 31, 2002
    im speechless at...well everything
    mainly both schools' representatives' stupidity
  • Andy on January 1, 2003
blair is a school, whitman is a school. who cares which is smarter or richer or better at sports or whatnot. we're here for our education you fools. stop being sissies and shut up. bye.
  • mathwin on January 1, 2003
good work KC, but the Nazis paragraph needs to go. I know you meant no harm, but it's just something one should never joke about. That and the n word.
  • olsibear (View Email) on January 5, 2003
let me just say that as i began reading your article i thought it was legit. however as i continued you just created more tension between the schools.
number 1, whats the difference between whitman parents and blair parents? they're all parents, they all live in maryland and are trying to make a living... whats your point?
number 2, you go on to say that you think that the comments from whitman that say our atheletes and school paper are better are not necessary then you go on to say 'However I will say that our Online staff is the best so BOOYA!' so your basically calling yourself a hypocrite
and just for kicks... did you happen to see the scoreboard last night?!

  • JackoWacko on January 5, 2003
Um, guys I think KC's article was mostly a joke. It seems pretty clear because he said it several times. whitman needs to stop taking this article to the extreme. he was bashing both sides.
  • JackoWacko on January 6, 2003
olsibear, i think the "booya" part was also a joke. lighten up people!
  • Mike on January 7, 2003
You fail to recognize something - While you say you that this article was simply poking fun at Whitman in the original article - that it was a joke - it is simply poor journalism. In good journalism, everybody understands the intent of the article - it's focus is clear. The orignal article fails to meet that standard.

"Your school newspaper is made up of eggheads who don’t rite grammar good or make sentences that sound well."

U sayed that godd. Well jobb! Godder then evry1 else...

(Note to everyone who didn't understand that comment:
    It's a joke. Thank you.)
  • To ollie on January 14, 2003
The size of our school has nothing to do with the wealth of the students within it. The county paid for and maintains Blair and every other school in the county. We have nothing to do with its size. It is ridiculous to say that we must have money simply because our school is big.
  • P.S. on January 14, 2003
We always beat Whitman in softball.
  • Ben H. (Whitman) (View Email) on January 16, 2003
I'll admit, when i first read the article i was offended. But lets face it; no student can do anythihng to encourage diversity in his or her respected school. I feel that Ben was simply pointing out the differences, but did it in a way that angered the Whitman students because we took it as offense. However... peolpe dont like being made fun of for being poor... or black... or jewish. But think about it this way, is the majority of the population rich? the answer is no. Whitman is a minority school, not in terms of ethnicity, but rather for how much our parents make. All i can say is BFD, my parents dont buy me whatever i want and never will... I think we should all just be mature, stop the commenting about how much one person hates another on this comment board, and get on with life... and anyway, WHAT IS A RIVALRY, it is about SPORTS, not how much my mom or dad makes... thank you
  • Adedeji O (View Email) on January 16, 2003
Fist of all Ben, i just want to say that people don't like to be made fun of because their poor or whatever because people who are "living it up" should not take offense to being rich. I mean come on. this article as KC said IS NOT A BIG DEAL. Aren't there more important issues that students would like to sound off on? I mean, as interesting as this article is, it's not something to sue for. And i will say this. If there wasn't any rivalry between the Vikings and the Blazers, i think the vikings might want to watch out. Cuz they might get burned

Really a good acticle. And also Get over it.
  • Freshman on February 7, 2003
I thought the article was great. I didnt think everyone(Whitman) would make such a big deal about it. Ben was obviously being sarcastic. Gosh, cant we all just get along? I mean, both Blair and Whitman are great schools that have a lot in common. Somthing like that shoudn't start a rivalry between our schools, but lets admit, Blair is the BEST school :)
  • Curious on February 11, 2003
What's all the fuss about? I see nothing wrong with a rivalry. It gives the various teams an impetus to do well. Besides, without competition, we will wilt away and die as a people. So, I say this: Go Blair Strategic Gaming Club, which has a perfect record against Whitman, and defeated them in the last meeting 5-1!
  • Frank Washburn (View Email) on March 12, 2003
As Whitman student who went to Blair in my freshman year, I have some things to say about this...hmm... retarded display of rivalry - retard on BOTH sides.

The Blair article that started this was crass and bigoted.

But the following Whitman responses were too.

I don't know much about sport teams, and I don't care. But in terms of people, I don't think you can make a [expletive] judgement about the people in the other school unless you've gone there. And that makes me, and Anushka Sunder (a senior who also went to Blair as a freshman) eligible. I don't know about Sunder's opinions, but I think that the people at each school are fine.

Silver Chips is an incredible newspaper, and I think that the Black and White pales in comparison.

But the Blair yearbook is a piece of trash; Whitman's is far superior, an opinion even shared by many of my Blazer friends.

Such rivalry is often unfounded and completely stupid, on both parts.
The pompous on both sides need a strict beating with a wooden plank.
