West Side Story in all its glory

by Abigail Graber, Page Editor
With stunning singing, acting and dancing talent and sets worthy of the professional stage, Blair’s production of West Side Story is an emotional, engrossing experience that never fails to entertain.

Working with an impressively large ensemble, director Kelly Newman has forged together a colorful, vivacious production, utilizing the various talents of her cast, whether they be break-dancing or stage combat. Her use of costumes, blocking, and body language set the perfect tone for the rough story of two rival gangs in New York City.

West Side Story is a modern re-working of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Set in New York, it tells the tale of the Jets, a native gang, and the Sharks, their Puerto Rican nemesis. Tensions between the two gangs and their leaders, the intense Riff (junior Jesse Galef) and suave Bernardo (sophomore Anthony Coello), are running high as the Sharks intrude on the Jets hard-won turf. Angry at the influx of immigrants into the neighborhood, Riff challenges Bernardo to a rumble to settle the matter once and for all.

Meanwhile, Tony (junior Ben Martinez), a former Jet, and Maria (senior Febe Huezo), Bernardo’s younger sister, have fallen madly in love with each other. Determined to stop their friends and family from killing each other, the couple unknowingly sets in place the inevitable tragedy that follows from their love and the hate that surrounds them.

Particularly noteworthy in Blair’s production are the several fight scenes, which are breathtaking to watch. From the opening brawl to the knife fight between Riff and Bernardo, the choreography is realistic and interesting, and it is executed with a level of proficiency not often seen in teen theatre.

Both Martinez and Huezo are well up to the task of hitting both the emotional and vocal high notes of their characters. Martinez’s boyish innocence is particularly endearing. However, through no fault of the lead actors, the supporting cast steals the show; frankly, after their bazillioneth love duet, Tony and Maria become predictable and repetitive. Junior Jessica Lynn Favin, a veteran of both Blair and community theatre, plays Bernardo’s worldly girlfriend, Anita, with snap and flair. She acts, she dances, she sings, and she’s completely unstoppable in the spotlight. Galef’s agility and energy brings the wiry Riff to life, and he is perfectly offset by Coello’s more focused, controlled mannerisms. Both actors, though a little rough around the vocal edges, act, dance and fight skillfully and through it all still manage, of course, to die in their light.

This production would not have been the same without the sweeping sets and backdrops designed and built by the stage crew. Maria’s mammoth balcony is a structural wonder and one of the highlights of the show. Additionally, the highway backdrop for the rumble, designed by seniors Danielle Prados and Christine Wang, is a visual masterpiece that brings grungy realism to that scene, complimented by the dramatic lighting.

The pit orchestra under the direction of Kurt Lucas brought the challenging music of West Side Story up to the level of the production onstage. Their months of work has paid off tremendously, strengthening the overall appeal of the show.

Though much of West Side Story is mostly innovative and original, there are points strongly reminiscent of the movie, especially during the song “Officer Krupke," the comic highlight of the show, and the War Council between the Jets and the Sharks. However, the movie tidbits are well-used, and even a slight feeling of dejŕ vu and a few minor technical errors could not detract from the overall presentation. West Side Story is a show not to be missed.

West Side Story is playing Friday, Apr 4, and Saturday, Apr 5 in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are five dollars for students and eight dollars for adults. Tickets are now on sale at the attendence office.

The play was one of Blair's best productions to date. Everyone should go see it. I'm not even into plays but I was swept away by the talent we have at this school when I saw this play on opening night. It's simply amazing.

Febe has an AMAZINGLY beautiful voice and Tony is definetly a beautiful crooner. I mean, the leads are so awesome! Congratualtions guys! You were definetly casted well.

Anita is SO gorgeous and graceful and I want to meet her and take pictures with her. Riff and Bernardo are really HOT too and they make awesome action stars and I want to marry them.

ALL of the cast are really going places.

The show is great and approiate for the times that we are living in. I especially loved the chereography, my favorite being the gym dance. You could tell that Ms. Newman definitely focused on those with dancing abilities this time around, and it's evident. I've heard many adults saying Blair's representation of West Side Story is the best that they have seen amng high schools. Kudos to the cast, stage crew, and pit.

This was a particularly incisive and well-written review (and not because I'm biased) -- I particularly liked the positive nods to the pit orchestra, the sets, and the fight choreography. Great job.

Just to let all you people know, this show really was pretty bad. None of the leads had any spectacular voice, and you'd think they could find one good singer in all of Blair! The acting was just as bad, with no emotion being shown. The "love" scenes would have been better off left out. The only standouts are Anita and Riff. The only good thigns this play had going were the choreogrpahy, which must have taken a while, and the orchestra pit. Next time this school attempts to put on a musical, please get actual singers or actors, not just the entire CAP. I'm sorry to say this, but it's obvious everyone else is'nt saying this becuase they are polite, but I have to be frank...NEVER ATTEMPT THIS AGAIN.

WSS was absolutely fabulous, and I'm sure good Master Martinez, along with the other young chap, will be quite stellar after they develop their voices a bit. Benny boy's really got some great stuff right there when he projects.
Dear Miss Lynn was dead-on amazing.
Choreography was great, if not the dancing, then the skillful timing. The Pit rocked like the schnizzlebagher.
Regardless, we all know the true highlight of the show was the excellent lights work :)
Great show, everybody should watch it... twice!
I love WSS... I almost cried...
I went and downloaded a load of it as soon as I got home... I listened to "There's a Place for Us" this morning... and bawled my eyes out. Great stuff, what y'all did in yon mysterious realm of Blaar Haskull.

I'll see you at Les Mis, dearest.

As a Blair alumni, I can honestly say that this is one of the best musicals done by the school. The acting was touching, as shown by the sheer genius of Anita and the much over-looked Doc. I cried during the rape scene. Much too real.

The singing was fair. Projection, everyone! As usual, the dancing was amazing. The choreography of the fight scenes also looked very nice and professional.

The flats used as most of the set were not impressive. But the highway and balcony were very nicely done.

    Overall grade: B+

I only wish I could have seen this show!
For years I said that West Side Story was a show that Blair should do. I guess I was a victim of the success I knew it would have; Vic and I were 2 of many who were unable to get in. :^(

Knowing full well the talent that Blair has both on-stage and behind the scenes, I expected the show to be a smash, and the article above gave me some taste of it. And I appreciate that. :^)

Is there any chance that it will be extended another weekend? Or that there could be a video showing (a poor second choice to live theater a la Blair, but better than not seeing it at all). [What is the smiley for crossed fingers and hopeful expression?]

I'm so glad you met with such great success. My best to you all; many fond memories are wrapped up in the Blair theater program...the best in the county!

    Love to you all.

    to "reality check":
i bet its easy for you to sit at your computer now and say horrible things about the show and the actors, but if you actually had guts you would have been up there on that stage. from where i was sitting, phoebe had a spectacular voice and there was amazing emotion on the stage.

also, i don't believe any of the leads are in CAP, and so what if a good number of CAP kids were in the cast (it was a HUGE cast), there was also a large number of magnet kids. to thrash out at CAP shows you are truly desperate to find something horrible to say. how dare you pass judgements on the cast and
ms. newman. did you like try out for the play and get rejected or something, cause you really just sound bitter.

i think you were really the loser in all this, because the rest of us definitely got our money's worth and more, while you, just lost your money.
  • blazer05 on April 6, 2003
I don't know, i thought stage crew s***ed. I saw it the first SAturday, and one of the sets kept rolling off and no one could control anything. The lights were good and stuff, but the sets? not really.
  • agent m on April 6, 2003
Definetly AWESOMEST show in a while. Although parts of the set were a bit substandard, the fight scenes and the singing were fantastic. This show was a real demonstration of talent on the part of the pit who were superlative and the cast who performed surprisingly well for mostly untrained singers. Totally blows the mind.
  • someone on April 6, 2003
Overall, I loved it. But I couldn't help but cringe through the Tony/Maria scenes... while Ben and Febe are definitely talented, they just weren't Tony and Maria. At all.
  • jennie on April 6, 2003
well all know that the PIT was the best part of the show!
  • To whoever on April 6, 2003
Ok, so the leads were a bit flat, but whoever says that they were bad obviously would not pick good people for the cast. Some of the Jets were the best singers and actors in the whole play, but would have made lousy Tonys, because some people just don't fit certain parts. I really enjoyed the play. Oh yeah, and I think that anyone that thinks that this play could have been a lot better, maybe you should try out, and see how hard it is to have a nice voice AND have the ability to act well.
  • Broadway on April 6, 2003
I can't wait until next year when the author of "reality check" trys out. I am sure they will steal the show. Maybe they should put their money where their mouth is. Until they are in a show, and do better, i think staying quiet would be the best idea.

This play rocked! I don't know where a lot of your minds were throughout the whole play...but seriously though. Are you just bitter because you suck so much more than them? Why are you lashing out at the people who spent like hundreds of hours rehearsing? God, why don't you get on the stage and start singing all those songs. I'd like to see how much you suck...
  • reality check on April 7, 2003
obviously my comments stirred you guys up a bit, but now i have a few things to say. has any1 noticed that almost everyone that has complimented this play was in it? I was never rejected for this play, because i didn't try out. i've been in other plays before, and have seen a fair share. don't start hating on critics just because they're not in the show. i think sports fans are allowed to gripe about their teasm because while they couldn't do any better, they aren't getting paid millions either, and it's not their job. it was the entire cast and crew's job to make this a good performance. also, i never said it was easy to sing well, act well and dance well. all i said was that if you can't do it, then why try to pretend? there are plenty of people(in this school and others) who can do those things with enough passion and skill to better this play(refer to a Gonzaga play). also, i thought there were plenty of people who did very well and were truly the only ones who actually worked on their characters, being Anita, Riff and the director of the dance.

I think people should draw their own conclusions about West Side Story but this is what I have to say:
    Ben Is Adorable
    Phoebe is an Angel
    Lynn is going places
    Tony is Suave
    Chino is sexy
    Riff is amazing
and the above people wouldn't be as fantastic as they are without the supercalifragilistic multi talented cast that supported them through out the entire experience( cast, crew, pit and teachers). Doing West side story was an experience I'll never forget. For a few weeks I got to live in a story i love and bring to life a timeless musical. Sure People aren't perfect, but we delivered an amazing show to the community and that can't be denied. West Side story Cast, pit and Crew I love you.

Fellas, fellas, it was a fantastic show, lemme say that Bernardo and Riff were the highlight! Tony's singing was fantastic, and Maria was lovely. And yes, as everyone says, Anita was beyond fantastic- she definitely had Bernardo and Riff beat!
Stage crew simply amazed me with the backdrops, they looked beautiful. The hours of work and commitment are evident.
Mr Lucas and the pit- wonderful! Mr Lucas deserves enormous props for the feat he accomplished- if they are at all good, it's due to the man!

WSS was good. I couldn't stand the movie version when I watched it, but Blair's musical version wasn't too bad. The only parts I cringed during were the really intense love scenes.

This is an especially big compliment considering that 9 times out of 10 I hate musicals from the depths of my soul. Although I still didn't like the "musical" parts of this musical, they didn't detract enough from the play as a whole to make me not enjoy it.

Oh, and great job to everyone in cast/crew/pit/whoever else I might be forgetting!
  • crew on April 8, 2003
okay, just for clarification, we know that some of the flats...well...sucked. but that was mostly the first weekend. the second weekend had better sets. but nevermind about the fabulously lit sets-- i wish we could do it again because the cast and pit were so incredible, and it's sad that we had to turn people away.

  • Drawing my own conclusions on April 9, 2003
    Re: Maya

Ben (Tony) Is Adorable...but his pop voice really didn't fit the role of tony. Sounded nice though. I doubt there's another guy that could sing so high

Phoebe (Maya) is an Angel that can't support the upper notes. Her performance in the love scenes lacked any sort of spark.

Lynn (Anita) is going places. I agree. She looked more Asian than Peurto Rican, but the acting was simply phenomenal. Nice broadway belting voice, too.

Tony (Bernardo) is Suave. But I couldn't hear him, and he didn't have the intensity I expect in the character.

Roberto (Chino) is sexy . Yes.

Jesse (Riff) is amazing. Have to agree with you. A little rough vocally, but a great actor/breakdancer.

    So those are my conclusions.

another thing(to Kevin L.), every play at blair should be sold out EVERY night. any play that doesn't must be horrible. with a cast of over 60, that means family of about 200, or at least 150. with an auditorium of about 700, and a student body of 3200...you do the math! especially when a teaser is shown that is so bad it makes people wanna come more than if it was good. the first sellout was due to curiosity, the second was pure awe at the failure. the third was mourning, and the fourth was out of repsect for the cast.
  • Abigail Graber on April 9, 2003
    Reality check:
First of all, you need to recognize that Gonzaga is a private school and has about 10 times the funding of Blair. They could probably hire a private vocal coach and could pay for much more expansive sets. Secondly, you have the right to criticize the play, no one's stopping you. However, stop trying to discredit other people's comments or speak for the school. When you say stuff like "I'm sorry to say this, but it's obvious everyone else is'nt saying this becuase they are polite," you make it seem like everybody is just euphemizing what they really thought of the show, when, judging from the play's reception at the box office and the comments posted here, you're in the minority. Also, though you claim that most of the people posting positively for the show were in it, there's no way you could know that, seeing as nobody is actually using their name and only a couple have admitted to being involved with the show. Share your opinion, but don't force it on others or use false information to back it up.
  • Silence is golden on April 9, 2003
To those of you who have something crappy to say about the show, is there a reason the rest of us need to hear it? It's one thing to critique, its another to be a rude and act as if you know exactly how it should have been done. If you have trashed an actor or actresses name, think about how hard those people worked and next time, keep it to yourselves.

I have to say that I think the girl who played Anita, Jessica Favin, is really going places. I would not be surprised if she became very famous one day. Not only is she beautiful, but she can sing very well and completely gets absorbed into her character. It's very rare to find talent that good in a high school play. I can just see it now.

"Yeah a lot of famous people went to our school."
"Yeah, Goldie Hawn, Connie Chung, Ben Stein, Jessica Favin."

To Miss Favin, I wish you all the best.

can we drop the discussion about who said what about magnets and CAPs and anyone else, and how some are good and others aren't and all of that garbage? anyone who was interested auditioned, and the person who was best for the role was casted; magnet/CAP/whatever had nothing to do with it, i'm sure. "reality check," you're giving the magnet a bad name by trying to make them seem like snobby show-stealers, which they're not. any talk of one being better is at most coincidence, and probably not even that. so just STOP MAKING IT AN ISSUE please!

and, although I admit I'm no musical critic, i did really enjoy the show. thanks to everyone involved!
  • Outraged on April 11, 2003
Why in the world is Febe entertainer of the month? The only things she's done is sing at her church, once a year at Sankofa, and this one show. She's not bad, but the obvious choice was on the front page. ANITA FOR ENTERTAINER OF THE MONTH. She's been in a million shows inside and outside of Blair. And the girl can really act.

i never said im from the magnet....i said i hate the CAP. i hate the magnet almost as much. so stop drawing conclusions from things i never wrote. and another thing....ryan martinez, Gonzaga's "low budget" was actually almost 13 times that of Blair's....but money doesn't buy talent so don't try to follow-up with that. and don't get mad ryan just because your play sucked bad.
  • The real Ryan martinez (View Email) on April 14, 2003
Oookay, just for the record, the person who has been posting comments is NOT the Ryan Martinez who went to Blair 2 years ago. Someone who shares my last name decided to post a comment as me.
That being said, I thought WSS was the best play I've ever seen at Blair. Ben did very well with acting and singing, and the rest of the cast was also great.
As for whoever this reality check person is, I'm sorry that your parents don't love you and can only suggest that you continue sitting alone and awaiting the cool release of death.
  • agent m on April 15, 2003
Wise up dude, your commentary is completely out of line. Do you or do you not understand how offensive you're being? I guess you need some way to work off your hormones because it's apparent someone with as much class as you isn't getting any. The play was excellent as far as high school productions and as far a talent is concerned it was there, but wait you wouldn't know because you didn't bother to see it. Give up the dumb ignorance, it's getting old.

The play was awesome regardless of the cast composition, CAP, magnet whatever. Everyone did a fantastic job.
  • Febe deserves to be Entertaine on April 20, 2003
It's clear that Outraged is either a friend of the girl who played Anita or is Anita herself. How would you know if she was in shows outside of Blair unless you knew her? It's great that she acted in several shows outside of Blair but don't understate Febe's accomplishments. You think that once a year at Sankofa is not a big deal? Sankofa is an amazing organization that not all schools in Montgomery County have. Blair is lucky to have Sankofa. Their shows are informative and amazing. You should go see them before you say anything about them. Yes, the girl who played Anita can act very well. But you make it seem like Febe's accomplishments mean nothing. Her voice makes her a shining star among Blair's students.

Entertainer of the Month measures talent, NOT how many shows someone has been in.

Outraged--you just sound extremely immature and jealous.
  • Ben deserves to be entertainer on April 21, 2003
*shrug* he was obviously best in the show. and entertainer should go to the best.

febe was nice, but she wasn't the best.
  • Blair Graduate on April 21, 2003
I recently graduated from Blair and came back expecting to see a good production from my former school. However, I was surprised by the lack of talent in the lead roles, sorry for the few exceptions, and the fact that THIS PLAY WAS HORRIBLE.

Oh wow, there are lots of comments to respond too. ^_^

reality check- You contradict yourself several times. First you insult our show, then you get defensive, then you say you didn't even see our show, then you insult our show again. Make up your mind, please. Or at least recognize that putting a show together with 80 high schoolers is no easy job. The talent in this show was marvelous from roles and ensemble alike. You can critique, but do not make wild assumptions just meant to provoke people and 'cause heart attacks'

crew- the flats were just hard to manage, that's all. The major scenes (under the highway, the city) were gorgeous. Thank you, crew!

    jennie- pit was amazing.

outraged- febe has the voice of an angel, and she deserves all the recognition in the world, and then some.

Febe deserves to be entertainer- I wrote where I've performed in my bio. Regardless, Febe has a gorgeous soprano voice. She is the talent at the school. Congratulations Febe! *hugs*

Great job to the jets, sharks, america dancers, cool dancers, adults, gym dancers, stage crew, pit, Mr. Kaluta, Mr. Lucas, Ms. Newman...everyone! I'd like to give a special thank you to Lilah for doing an amazing job of choreographing the America dance.

There isn't any joke here, "reality check." If you did not see the play, do yourself an act of kindness and stop criticizing, it is useless. West Side Story caused heart attacks, you didn't

“Reality Check” if you didn’t see the play how can you post so many negative comments? I understand every production needs improvement and criticism can be good, however your word choice is very poor and upsetting many people. Perhaps if you wondered you comments intelligently people wouldn’t be so flustered. You just come across as being ignorant. TO EVERYONE ELES IN THE PLAY wonderful job. The play was pulled together beautiful even with so many days missed form the snow. Tony, Bernardo, Maria, Anita, and Chino BRA-VO. To all the Gym Dancers and American girls---my hats off. To the puppet master of them all Ms. Newman you have a wonderful flair for making a high school play look as if it belongs on Broadway. Much luv, especially to Chino XOXO.

oh my god....i cant believe how people can be so incredibly ignorant...i got a reeeeeallly small part and yet i worked so hard for this show that i wouldnt know what to do without it....constructive critizism is good and i can be cool with that....but you dont understand how hard it is to put on a show like west side story...you may not realize the amount of talent and challenges you have to go through....such as the PHENONAMLY HARD MUSIC (ok yeah i know i spelled that wrong) I mean sure...there were ups and downs and i myself wished some of the parts had gone to other people...but you can tell us that without being complete jerks about a really amazing show....normaly in productions of west side story you get incredibly dancing and singing but no good acting....and i have to say that our acting was better than i can possibly imagine...and lastly......I have been leads or supporting leads in more shows than i can count and i would give them all up to be perform my tiny little dancing part just one more time on that stage.....cast: we did wonderful no matter what these stupid people say.....

    reality check:
get one yourself. gonzaga's theater can't do much on their own. THEY HAVE NO GIRLS. anything from gonzaga that's good is only due in little part to gonzaga. it's more like gonzaga can attract and hire the talent that blair has w/o trying.
  • Chino on May 2, 2003
I'm with you pal, I miss the play too.

Our school will be doing a production of West Side Story next year. I will be working on set design and construction. I would like to get in contact with someone whow was involved with the sets.
