School shooting occurs in Pennsylvania

by Nora Toiv, Page Editor
A 14-year old student at Red Lion Area Junior High School in Red Lion, Pennsylvania shot and killed the Principal and then shot himself in the head, according to CNN.

The shooting occurred on April 24 at around 7:30. The alleged shooter, James Sheets did not seem to have any motive. After shooting the principal, the student shot himself in front of students in the cafeteria. The student was armed with several handguns that belonged to his stepfather but did not injure anyone else.

"Everyone ran out of the cafeteria yelling 'He has a gun,"' said eighth-grader Danny Dulin, as reported by the Associated Press.

Students who knew Sheets said that he was quiet, a member of the football team who liked to skateboard and play basketball. Police cannot make out a motive for the shootings. “We don’t know why today. And we don’t know why, period," said Red Lion Borough Police Chief Walt Hughes.

Angelia and Arthur Baker, Sheets parents, did not see any warning signs and Sheets did not have any school problems or any legal problems. Hughes elaborated on Sheets motives. "I think it's safe to say that something was building inside of him that he couldn't control."

Danica Shirey had a locker next to Sheets and said that he never got into trouble and liked everyone. “He never had a problem with anyone," she said.

The principal, Eugene Segro was pronounced dead after he was taken to York Hospital; Red Lion is mourning his death. "The school district is grieving the loss of our beloved junior high school principal, Dr. Segro and the student involved," said Larry Macaluso, Red Lion Area superintendent.

The same school district was victim to a machete attack that injured 11 kindergarteners in February 2001. Red Lion is about 30 miles southeast from Harrisburg, PA.

I can't believe I never heard about this. What a horrible thing to have happen...I think it's really sad that this sort of news has become so commonplace. And a MACHETE attack? It's shocking.

I am graduating from Red Lion Sr. High and this was a bad event. This is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of my life. I knew Dr. Segro and he was a good man. It is not guns that kill it is the person so don't blame it on guns. The kids down there which where at the school where the machete attack was are going to have a rough time. Color has nothing to do with a shooting and someone with a commit of that's nice needs to show some respect.

I was a ninth grader at the time of the accident.
it struck us all as a big surprise, no one could believe it was true. The principle everyone loved and respected, shot... not in Red Lion...
The whole town was struck by the news, it may take months to get back to "normal" but dr/ segro will always be in our hearts, as a great mentor and a great person.
    with deepest love, Nikitalee

I was at the next table in the cafeteria. I remember looking up when i heard a bang and seeing dr segro on the ground moaning and jimmy holding the gun! seconds felt like minutes and everyone was screaming and running but i couldnt move until someone dragged me across the table... I understand that many people cannot imagine or grasp the concept that things like this happen... I do however know that it has nothing to do with race gender or mental state of mind! Jimmy had issues of his own that oviously wasnt sorted out in a better way... This was a messed up situation on both parts! Jimmy was a funny, goofy, sweet friend and Dr. Segro was always friendly stern helpful and always had a smile on... I remember we used to make fun of him because he would always hold his hands behind his back and pace back and forth watching the time every morning... Jimmy was one of us that participated in that!! I'm not saying any of this was right but for me the best way i can cope with things is to remember them the way they were and not how things ended!

I wasnt at the school when it happen but i was at the elementary school during the machete attack. All i remeber was sitting in my classroom and it was beach day and we were waiting for our knock on the door to tell us we could go to lunch then this sound comes over the intercome and its like 3 beeps or something my teacher just look at it and was like lets just wait to go to lunch. we sat in our classroom with the door closed and we had a bathroom in our classroom and she was like lets play a game see how many people we can fit in the bathroom and we stayed in there for a hour we had no idea why we were in there at all and the when we came out they were takin gus one by one out of the classroom to our parents.
