PG County gives more than Montgomery

by Nora Toiv, Page Editor
Prince George’s County is the fifth highest giver of donations to charitable and religious associations in the country, according to the Washington Post.

PG county residents give an average of 16.7% of their income to charities which for their county is about $3,443 for an average income of $20,615. The only county ahead of PG County was Fauquier County at 18.9% but Fauquier County has a much smaller population than PG.

Fairfax County and Montgomery County, two of the most wealthiest and prosperous counties in the country gave some of the lowest donations. The median household income for somebody living in Fairfax is $81,000 and they donated around 6.3% of their income to charities. Montgomery County gave at about the same rate, 6.7%.

PG County is one of the wealthiest majority black counties in the country and black people give 25% more of their income to charity than white people. Religion played a large role in the donations with 3/4 of the donations going to religious causes.

At Jericho City of Praise in Landover most members give about 10% of their earnings to the church. The donations to the church are not only for religious purposes there are many social programs sponsered by the church, as well. Some of the programs include, a drug ministry, after school care and a holiday food give away.

Researchers have notice a “U-shaped" giving pattern where the people at the bottom and at the top give the most while the people in the middle give the least.

this is a high school news paper

how does this relate to high school?

u just summerized someone else's article

this is relevenat. it relates in that this is showing that us rich mongomery county residents need to donate!
for example, maybe if montgomery county residents, or at least blair cluster residents, had given $$$ out of pocket, Blair would have been built bigger and would not be so crowded!

To think that you people think that this article is not relevant is pathetic. Let me clarify for you why this article is important. WE LIVE IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, A WEALTHY, PROSPEROUS COUNTY THAT NEIGHBORS A POOR AND NOT SO PROSPEROUS PG COUNTY. PG gives more to charities or in other words are more generous than the people in this county who make much more money. Shouldn't we be giving more?

To those of you claiming Nora's article is not relevant--
this is a current event, it is something occuring right now locally in our area-- the event is that us people living in Montgomery County with plenty of money are not giving enough!
also, many articles we have printed in the past as news have been our summaries of other people's articles (it's a common practice)-- it's kind of hard for us to get news as fast as the post.
this is news that should matter to us and to our families, people.

I'm astounded and amazed that people give so much of their money away when they're already giving away so much to the government in the form of taxes. I don't really give to any charities - and I'm happy that there are other suckers who are willing to carry the load! That's just more money for me.

I don't want to sound like a crazy person here. But no, Nora, I don't believe we should be giving more. We already pay taxes, which fulfills our commitment to the community. Anything past that is strictly voluntary, and no one should be thought of as better or worse for donating or not.
Exhorting your comrades to give more to the community smacks of communism. Just a thought.
