Mr. Yuk retires

by Lauren DalBello, Page Editor
Mr. Yuk, the frowning, green-faced icon that decorated poisonous substance bottles across the world, is retiring.

The pukey face with the poison control hot line number printed around the collar was designed to discourage children from approaching poisonous objects and give parents fast access to the poison control hotline number in case of emergency.

At first, poison control centers figured that the sticker’s expression would warn kids of danger. A new study, however, shows that children may be attracted to the sticker because of its bright green color.

Last year, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh distributed 42 million Mr. Yuk stickers. Americans have introduced him to Europe, Asia and Iceland and corporations have placed his face on the product labels of hundreds of hazardous materials, but poison control centers nationwide have advised parents to discard any Mr. Yuk stickers or magnets they are using.

New stickers are being created that simply publicize the hot line number: 1-800-222-1222.

My parents used these stickers all over dangerous chemicals when I was growing up and I knew that I was not to open or play with them. I think that study is crap!

Guess they decided not to retire Mr. Yuk...I just phoned last week and Children's Hospital sent me 50 Mr Yuk stickers. I believe they work...I grew up with them and although I liked the sticker, I always knew that Mr. Yuk meant "bad stuff". ha ha. Glad they still have him for my son!

I need Mr.Yuk! My 7 yar old daughter always grabs the cleanng supplies even after I stress to her that they are not for her to have. I strongly think they should not get rid of the stickers. Ijust got he phone number to call and get some for my home. I remember they always taught me and I plan to discuss them with her class this year also and pass some out to take home with the students.

I need Mr. Yuk! I have a 2 year old and he really identifies with pictures, He know "hot" and we have all the cleaners and Chemicals away from his reach, as well as locked behind "child proof" latches. My husband and I agree that Mr. Yuk is perfect for him! Thank Dr. Krenzelok!

Actually, I just tried to call the poison center 2 days ago for the free stickers...and was informed (by a rather rude woman) that they no longer provide the stickers as they were found to be more harmful than good. I am going to try to write for them, so we will see. It really is a mystery!!!!
