Blair junior hit by SUV

by Branden Buehler, Page Editor and KC Costanzo, Page Editor
A Blair junior was airlifted to Suburban Hospital after being struck by an SUV on the morning of September 23. The student, Bezawit Bayou, was leaving school following a power outage that closed Blair.

Bayou was in stable condition as of 5 PM on Tuesday, September 23, with her injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

Dorothy McCollum, Assistant Principal of Oakland Terrace Elementary School in Silver Spring, witnessed the accident. According to McCollum, Bayou had just gotten off a bus and was proceeding to cross the street, but did not look at the correct side of traffic before crossing. McCollum also said that Bayou was not at a crosswalk.

Bayou was hit by a Toyota RAV4 SUV after running into the street. McCollum said that Bayou "drifted in and out of consciousness" before being airlifted away from the scene approximately seven minutes later.

Principal Phillip Gainous passed by the accident on his way to school and said he saw several students playing in the traffic. "They would jump out into the street and see how close the cars would come to them," he said. "That is insane."

Gainous urged students to use caution when crossing the busy roads near Blair. "Students should use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing the street," he said.

Bayou was hit at the intersection of University Boulevard and Glenville Road. The incident caused major traffic problems, as University Boulevard was closed on both sides.

    Thanks for this informative article.

This is awful that a student was hurt. This is why we have laws about jaywalking and constant elementary school drilling "look left, right, and left again."

As for the complete idiots that were playing in traffic and testing limits on cars, that is asinine. Those people really need to talk to Charles Darwin.
  • anonymous on September 23, 2003
This is an unfortunate incident. But let's not forget why this has happened...because MCPS did not make the appropriate call and allow the schools a 2-hour delay this morning so that schools could assess the damage to their buildings and then made adjustments to close further schools. Are we that "test conscious" that we are willing to put students and staffs lives at stake!!!

i think that wasn't a very smart thing to do but it was and instresting article. I go to Eastern Middle School and I am in seventh grade
  • in response to anonymous on September 23, 2003
I agree that it was a mistake by MCPS to open schools on time, but that does not excuse the fact that the student was crossing at a point other than a crosswalk and did not even bother to look both ways before doing so.
  • Neko (View Email) on September 23, 2003
Anonymous, that's rediculous. Let's all blame the county because a student did not obey traffic laws! The same thing could have happened were the power on today and the girl going home after school.

The crosswalks are there for a *reason*, people.

However, it is an upsetting thing, and I hope she recovers soon.

Thank you for this article, and its timely delivery; as soon as I got home I noticed this on the Blair page.

I agree that it's very stupid to be playing in traffic, however, it doesn't seem to me that that's what Bezawit was doing at the time. It was a mistake not to use a crosswalk, but as far as I can understand from the article, she was just trying to get home after the power outage. This brings up the issue of why she was at the school in the first place even though it ended up closed: because someone messed up and opened schools without being certain they were able to be.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that the article seems to skip over that fact. It also seems to include several quotes and observations implying that Bezawit was being particularly irresponsible (mentioning playing in traffic), which is quite a shame. Take this article with a grain of salt: She didn't have to be at school this morning, and this accident didn't have to happen.

i think it's hilarious how many people get on here and, without knowing anything except for what is presented in the article, try to blame Bezawit. according to most of you, she almost DESERVED to be hit by that truck. OK, next time any one of you walks out into an intersection or fails to look both ways I'll be waiting in my 18-wheeler. that's the way we show compassion, right?
  • MindMan101 (View Email) on September 23, 2003
I'm sorry but i'll have to agree with anonymous, because the MCPS officials made a stupid descision to open schools this happened. Traffic was intense and there were a couple car accidents we witnessed around that area. It was rush hour in the morning and something like this was inevitable.
  • fjh112 (View Email) on September 23, 2003
As representatives of our community/county, the school officials had an obligation to make timely decisions in the best interests of our students. I agree that everyone should adhere to the rules against jaywalking, etc...but, I think it's important to remember that she is a junior in high school (16? 17?) whereas these county administratives are adults we've decided to place in positions of authority. Not only did the late decision cause a major traffic problem and put the students' safety at risk, but it caused a lot of inconvenience to those parents whom had change their entire workday to make sure they could get to their stranded kids.
  • Abhi on September 23, 2003
I don't know Bezawit but I hope she has a full recovery and gets well soon! Unfortunate that the accident happened, but the fact remains that students should not have been at school today in the first place. Although Bezawit did not exhibit perfect judgment, she WAS placed in a dangerous situation by virtue of the confusing events of this morning.... Once again, Bezawit our thoughts and prayers are with you.
  • trang on September 23, 2003
oh my gosh! Bezawit is my friend we were waiting for the bus together, but then I went on the C4 first; that's the last time I saw. Oh my gosh! I can't believe that this happened. I mean, I heard about some girl who got hit by a car, but I'd never suspect that it's her.
  • Feza (View Email) on September 23, 2003
I know Bezawit and her sister, and I can't believe this happened. Maybe she did look, but she just didn't see the truck coming. Things happen sometimes...it can happen to anyone at any moment, and you can't say it's her fault. I thank God she's in stable condition. Get well soon Beza!
  • daniel green on September 23, 2003
I agree that jaywalking is careless and sometimes fatally dangerous, but we cannot go so low as to point fingers in this trajedy. I'm sure everyone reading this has jaywalked at some point in their life, 90% of us have probably jaywalked at University! It could happen to any of us, and if it happened to you I'm sure you wouldn't go marching around claiming responsibility. Additionally this incident cannot be blamed on MCPS's (lack of) decisions. Even with the worst scenarios we should all do our best to stay safe.

    Get well soon Bezawit!
  • A guy on September 23, 2003
I know this is tragic and we all hope that this girl gets well soon but i dont believe that any of this can be blamed on the MCPS. MCPS closed the schools that needed to be closed due to power failures. Noone can predict the power problem that we had this morning. Yes jaywalking is bad and yes we all do it, but testingyour life doing it is taking it to far. if you know you can get across the street safely yet jaywalk, then thats fine, but atleast glance over and make sure theres nothing about to critically injur you. We cannot blame anybody but ourselves for our actions, its about time we all start to realize this.
  • Lisa on September 23, 2003

In her defense University and Glenville do not have crosswalks...but there is a cross walk at the end of the block. There is a blind turn that she could have not seen the truck comming but thats more of a reason for her to KEEP looking. I know personally anytime i cross a street i keep looking for cars to come. maybe this will be a lesson. You can not blame MCPS. She could have gotten hit at any time of the day is she didn't look before crossing the street..if it didn't happen while she was leaving blair it could have happened when walking with her family so HA. and its not a matter about jaywalking..jaywalking is alright as long as there aren't any cars comming!

HELLO...if anyone is still trying to reprimand Bezawit for jaywalking, or saying "maybe this will be a lesson," let's remember: the only evidence we have is an elementary school administrator saying she was not at a crosswalk and didn't look both ways. and please, although you may think it was necessary to cover all parts of the story, i have to say that it was inconsiderate to mention her shoes flying off and the fact that it "caused major traffic problems." who cares? a sixteen year-old girl was hit by a truck!

  • a girl on September 24, 2003
This is a very tragic event. First, we do not need to start pointing fingers. But if we do, we should blame everyone. Blair had no right taking us to school, then dropping us off and telling us we should walk home, and not wait for our buses to come back. Montgomery County Board of Education, should have been aware of the conditions at Blair, and should have mentioned that Blair was on a two-hour delay, or it was closed. We are not sure if Bayou was looking or not, or if she tried to run from whatever hit her, so we should not come to assumptions. Yes, she was at fault for jay walking, but dosen't everyone jay-walk. We could blame the constructors who chose this land, to build Blair on, right next to a busy and dagerous road. The traffic lights were off, and as someone said, there was a blind spot and Bayou couldn't tell. To all who are unsympathetic, God have mercy on you. Put yourself in that situation, would you like to read about people blaming you and saying it was your fault. What if Bayou wanted to use the crosswalk, but her sister persuaded her to jay walk, what if she just wanted to get home as soon as possible. People there are a lot of what ifs, let us not point fingers as yet, because as far as I'm concerned, the Silver Chips Newspaper, has not given us sufficient information. There was not enough quotes. Yes, we did have a quote, but from an elementary principal. I do not recall seeing quotes from other students that witnessed the accident, no quotes from Bayou's sister or family. My heart goes out to Bayou and her family. May God cover you with the blood of Jesus, and may you recover as quickly and safely as possible.

Alright. "Another Guy," I'm not sure if you remember, but recently there was a hurricane. Remember that? And remember how power was out for millions of people? I'm gonna blame Blair not having power on the hurricane, NOT pepco. And them being "too lazt to say it (blair having no power"k pm the news cuz they would be too embarrassed" First of all, People at Blair know when theres no power, not just Pepco, and 2nd, THERE WAS A HURRICANE. Pepco didn't just slip up, so its not their fault. Also, Stop blaming MCPS, all of you know that this could have happened at ANY OTHER TIME of the day. So stop being bitter because you had to go to school and then got out early.

It is not good that a student got hit, but they said all the first day and the next, and every day that you have to be careful when crossing the street. Also use the crosswalk, its much safer. Remember to look both ways, listen, and stay alert. I used to have to cross Caroll everyday to get to school, so I would not the dangers of crossing busy roads. One more thing: you are quite right bblazer.

Bezawit's accident is a terrible tragedy. I'm sure I speak for many when I express my deepest hope that she quickly recovers.

Wow, some people act as if they never jeywalked in their life! We all do it! So why blame the girl who has just been hit by a truck! She sits behind me in Anatomy class and she seems like a very nice person. Drivers should just be more careful. I mean...they ARE the ones with the who knows how many ton truck! It's only fair that the driver be more careful. Personaly I think Gainous need to grow up and be more compationate about Bezawits situation rather than make the commnents he did. Holla if you agree.

  • Angry junior (View Email) on September 24, 2003
OMG U MORONS. Look at yourselves, a girl was nearly killed and instead of being normal human beings and saying something about the tragedy all u can think about is blaming somebody. First you claim that it's Blair's fault for telling us we had school when we didnt but at the time they maid the anouncment we DID have electricity and school would have gone on. The fact that a random accident caused the lights to go out CANNOT be blamed on MCPS. To the genius "another guy" who claims it was pepco's fault, think about this. Two million people lost power after Isabel and Pepco managed to restore power to nearly all of them in less than a week. Blair had power by Monday evening. The power outage at blair tuesday morning was not pepco's fault, it was an accident, just like what happened to Bezawit. For god's sake please stop finding faults with everyone but yourself. I know i sound like a condescending and hypocritical prick but it had to be said. Im really sorry about what happened to Bezawit and I hope she has a speedy recovery.

I don't feel the accident was her fault exactly and until she's in any shape to comment on the event, I don't think we can really judge one way or the other.
  • J on September 24, 2003
You can't blame the driver because when you are driving you can't break and expect the car to stop an inch away from her. The driver have to be aware of something on the road ahead of time because it can't stop in an instant. And you can't blame her for jaywalking either because, doesn't anybody jaywalk? Just be careful and take care of yourself because it's your responsiblity to keep this from happening to yourself. Get well Bezawits. God is on your side.

Guys, accidents happend. Thats why they are called "accidents." Sure its easy to sit there and blaim others for what happend, cause thats what everyone does anyways. Its never someones own fault is it? You can blame her for not being aware of her surroundings and what not, you can blame the driver for driving too fast, you can blame Blair for not have atleast delaying the school, but the fact is, it was an accident. accidents cant be stopped. They can be avoided, but if it happens, it happens.

"...it is the drivers fault because he should not have been going so fast if he knows that there is a school nearby and the students is on there way back home."

The article never mentions the driver's speed at the time of the accident, so it seems unfair to assume that they were speeding.

We wish to convey our apologies for any distress our article may have caused Bezawit's family. We realize the accident must have been very traumatic for all of her loved ones.

We did not take this story lightly. While Silver Chips does try to be sensitive to the student body, we feel that it is our duty to inform the Blair community. All quotes were included to describe the incident as clearly as possible as well as to stress the importance of safety.

In recent years, several Blair students have been hit by cars. We’ve posted articles about such events in the past with the intention of making it clear to the student population that crossing the roads near Blair is dangerous and should be done with caution. We are in no way insinuating that Bezawit was at fault in this case, we simply reported what was seen by the eyewitness.

We are sorry for the suffering Bezawit's family has had to endure and we hope Bezawit’s recovery is quick and complete.

I would just like to say how dare those of u who commented on how well the article was written. How low can u get. I f u wanted to thank the author or comment on the article u should have commented it to him insread of writing it down in here as if this is a plcae to critic the article as if it were a good story. This is serious. I knew Beza and for u to to just comment on the way the article was writen is somewhat offending. This article should not have even been publicated due to the fact that there was no conscent by the victim and family members. As for u Chris Muller what the hell were u thinking publishing without concent, you should have it removed if people want to know more than they should contact the family members of th e victim.

I think this was a good article and unfortunately some people do not feel that way. I don't think this article was for entertainment purposes, but rather a news article that informed the public. Lets keep in mind that the media is there to report on news events and I don't think they necessarily need the permission of people to write their stories. Something unfortunate has happened and its in the interest of Silver Chips to report the news and to provide the community with information.

Hey, it's unfortunate and sad that this student was hit but her friends and family need to get over the fact that there's a news article about it

When you're hit by a car while walking home from school, no one needs to get your permission to publish an article

    hey you communists

have u ever heard of the bill of rights?

    #1 = Freedom of PRESS

if you dont like it, go back to russia

In my opinion Silver Chips has every right to post this article. All the information presented was publically available, all Silver Chips did was bring it together in a non baised article. Since no information in the article could cause future harm to Bezawit there is no reason Silver Chips would CHOOSE to hold the story.

Also, isn't the article written by the online editors? Chris isn't in the byline...

Hey jess, I understand how you feel against this type of publication, but there is free speech and these people are just doing their job. Chris is my good friend and I'm sure he did not write this with disrespect, nor did he not understand the seriousness of it.

Take an example, just because you knew President Clinton and supported him (just an example) doesn't mean you have the right against all the news publication on the Monica Lewinsky case. News are to be made to the public and it shouldn't be stopped. We should be thankful we have free speech in our country.

    Please reconsider.

I have prayed for your quick recovery Bezawit, God willing. I have also prayed for your family, especially Betilihem, for the pain that they had to endure as a result of this accident.

Now, I think that while Silver Chips certainly had the right legally to publish this, a matter of taste and tact is involved. A high school newspaper is supposed to serve the high school community. How is this serving the community if Bezawit's own family is demanding that this article be removed? Please, Silver Chips, use your hearts. This is not the Washington Post, I'm sure you can make alowances for the feelings of those involved

dont you dare blame chris for printing this article. he just wrote the facts that he could find. he didn't try to dig up some mysterious story. he just wrote the facts. regular newspapers do it all the time. and i bet you do it to when you speak to other people. so shut up

while the story was true, i think it misleads the readers, when they read abut the pricliples comment on students jumping on the street. Even though i don't dought that there are students that dod do that. It gives the impression that this girl was hit doing one of "those jump".
