Class of 2004 graduates

by Adedeji Ogunfolu, Page Editor
Six hundred forty three seniors graduated from Blair at the Jericho City of Praise on June 3. Parents, teachers, alumni and current students gathered to celebrate the commencement of the Class of 2004.

The nearly four-hour event began with a rendition of On a Hymn Song of Philip Bliss by Blair’s symphonic band. They also played Pomp and Circumstance (March No. 1) for the processional.

The occasion included speeches from the senior class advisor Norman Stant and senior class officers President Jessica Favin and Vice President Ayodele Cole. Both discussed the meaning of graduation and the importance of the knowledge that each graduate has acquired at Blair.

Guest speaker Marcus Johnson discussed the value of being a Blazer and how difficult life is after high school, but Johnson assured students that Blazers would not have that many problems living their lives to the fullest. “I thought he had great stage presence and he talked about issues that people in Blair face," said sophomore Gannett Cassidy, who attended the ceremony.

Principal Philip Gainous and Community Superintendent Dr. Gregory E. Thornton gave remarks and presented the diplomas to the Class of 2004.

Some seniors were especially elated at the realization of their graduation. Michael Hayes gave Mr. Gainous a great hug, and Peter Musto bowed to Gainous.

After the diplomas were distributed, treasurer Isatta Mansaray gave thanks to all of the parents, relatives and staff that attended the ceremony. Mansaray then led the turning of the tassels.

I thought the validictorian also gives a speech. Did we not have a validictorian?
  • Disappointed on June 4, 2004
I thought Lynn Favin's speech was not appropriate. She sounded way too fake, superficial, and overall negative. It was a time to celebrate our graduation, which I think she failed to do for the majority of her speech - she kept on bringing up the negatives. Way to go.

    Who read the student's names?

Disappointed - Ya know, it's too bad you didn't care enough to run for Senior Class President, do the job the entire year, write a speech, recite it in front of your entire class, and get criticized for it.
  • maya on June 6, 2004
Too "disapointed", first I'd like to see you write a graduation speech to be delivered in front of all your classmates, and second I thought Lynn's speech was entirely appropriate and excellently delivered. I thought she did a wonderful job and brought a good message.

We don't have validictorians in the county any more, someone complained several years ago that students who choose non-honors electives were being short changed by the system even if they were the most qualified outside weighted GPA

I am never going to another high school graduation ever again. Especially if they school has 650 students in the graduating class. If i grow up and have kids, I'll pay them money and let them know that daddy has some very important business to attend to and therefore will not show up to see them walk across the stage. Some call me cruel, I call myself practical.

Side note: I see the site hasn't fallen apart yet. Nice work guys.

    Who cares about all ya'll 06 or 07! It's all bout 05!
  • David on June 8, 2004
If you had paid attention to the speech, you'd see that the message was something like "value the people around you and celebrate them on this day of graduation". The beginning was a joke to show that the negatives at Blair aren't important compared to the amazing experience we've been given. I've seen 3 Blair graduations and this speech was by far the best.

The speech blew me away. It's too bad that a handful of people were not touched by it. You are missing out. Excellent job, Ms. Favin.

Please put something on the site telling us alumni where all the 04 Blazers are heading for higher learning. This was really helpful last year.

    Your pal,

Just FYI, the graduation began at 9:45 and was completed before 12:00 Noon. Just slightly over 2 hours, not the "nearly four-hour" event you describe. It was incredibly efficient but did not seem rushed.
  • senior (View Email) on June 10, 2004
it was almost four hours because choir members, band members, and seniors had to be there at 8 in order for the ceremony to start promptly
