Student driver's car hit in parking lot accident

by Seema Kacker, Page Editor
Senior Phuson Hulamm's car was hit Tuesday, Oct. 5 by a parent dropping a student off in the student parking lot. Damage to Hulamm's car was significant, but nobody was hurt in the accident.

The event occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. when Hulamm was entering his parking space, along the 300s lane, according to Hulamm. After glancing in his rear mirror, Hulamm swung right and then sharply turned left into the space, he explained. A car that had been approximately 10-15 feet behind him accelerated and hit him directly on the driver's side of his car, he said.

The accident resulted in damage to Hulamm's car's left side. “My door is pretty dented and scratched up," he said. According to Hulamm, the parent's car was only slightly damaged. “There were some minor scratches, but I thought it looked fine."

Although parents are not allowed to drop students off in the student parking lot, they still do, according to Security Assistant Everett Campbell. “It happens, and we're doing the best we can with limited resources," he explained. “[Unfortunately], it's the easiest place for parents to drop their kids off."

The worst part about this was that immediately after the impact the parent started to scream at Phuson and blamed the accident on him. I thought parents were supposed to be role models...

Poor Phuson. My own car was dented the hell out of today. I came out and there was just a big rectangle of sports car yellow paint. Apparently, someone had scraped it while parking next to me, and hauled out without leaving any insurance information. I'm assuming it's a parent, because no students or staff drive a yellow car at Kennedy. I showed my mom, and she said it didnt look too bad, I had gotten most of the paint off. Except, it's one big giant dent on my whole passengers side, so big you dont know it's a dent, looks like it may be part of the car. Very nice guy at the gas station spent 20 minutes wiping the paint off.

people should stop dropping people off at the student parking and stop stopping in the right lane of the street to drop their kid off. I wouldnt mind that much if they didnt make me hit a red light while they stroll past it. People who can't drive make me mad...
