School evacuated due to ruptured sprinkler

by Robert Day, Page Editor and Nora Toiv, Page Editor
The auxiliary gym was flooded Wednesday when an errant ball ruptured a pipe in the gym’s sprinkler system.

The softball team was practicing in the auxiliary gym due to the rain. A softball player hit an "incredi-ball," a ball similar to a softball but softer, into the sprinkler during softball practice. The pipe broke and water flowed from the pipes into the gym. The fire alarm sounded shortly after, but announcements said evacuations were not necessary. Half an hour later new annoucements were made to evacuate the building. Silver Spring Fire Department station 16 was called.

The girls softball team, boys volleyball team, and co-ed volleyball team helped prevent the water from flowing into the main gym by stopping the water from flowing under the divider with paper towels.

According to fire department officers, the main valve was shut off immediately, however the water already in the pipes had to be drained before the pipe could be fixed.

After the sprinkler system was drained, school building services started cleaning the mess. By 5:35, all water had been removed from the gym.

Building service worker Cliff Wallace estimated that 200 to 300 gallons of water were in the gym.

All evening activities at the school were cancelled. According to principal Phillip Gainous, workers were expected to fix the pipe that night, and school continued as usual Thursday.

The water flowing from the sprinkler system was originally black. Building services suspect that the black discoloration was due to soot in the system.

I was practaclly right there when it happened. I had just come out of the band room and someone yells, "The gym's flooded!" So I went over there and there were nothing but puddles of water on the floor. And the smell was absolutely horrible, like mold and wet wood and furnishing, if you can imagine the stench of that. The smell extended past the guidance office, at least. I was in my SAT Prep class when an announcement to evacuate the building came over the PA System. At first I thought that they were kidding, but then a second announcement came about 5 minutes later and the guy sounded pretty serious. I think that the sprinklers went off in thr first place because someone pulled the fire alarm, but I'm not sure. I looked at the gym again this morning, and you could still sort of see the places where the puddles had been last night.

I was actually right there when it happened. I'm the Varsity Softball manager so I was there when Carly hit the pipe. At first it was clear water and people were laughing and thought it was just going to be a little puddle. But then the box that she hit (the big red one in the small gym) opened up a little bit more and the black water started streaming out. Everybody started running and was weirded out. Rumor has it they might have to replace the floor because the water got UNDER there. Volleyball's practice got cancelled today because of that too.

    Hey
I love you online newspaper. I am a newspaper editor in Nebraska and think having the paper online is so cool. Anyways, the same thing happened at my school, but it wasnt realized that it was leaking so bad until the next day. The floor was totally ruined, and had to be replaced. Quite a costly practice!!
