Trash fire prompts evacuation

by Joe Howley, Page Editor
A fire set in a restroom on the third floor this afternoon led to a fire alarm and complete building evacuation.

The fire was set in a trash can in the boy's restroom in the 310 hallway. According to On-Site Emergency Team Coordinator Mark Curran, it was set intentionally. "This was not an accident," said Curran. "This was an act of planned vandalism."

The fire alarm sounded at 1:46, and the all-clear to return to the building was given at 2:08.

The trash can and its contents were virtually destroyed, charred and spread across the bathroom floor.

The same thing happened at my school last year, except THREE trash cans in different parts of the school were set on fire at the same time.

Trash fire, bomb threat.... Someone wants Spring Break early or they otherwise don't like Blair for some reason. Fortunately we have good evacuation procedures. Two things, though:

    (1) we need to practice Code Red in case if it is needed
    (2) during fire evacuations people should not be walking right next to the school in case the burning part is there (or the bomb will blow the school up)
