Fire alarm truncates fifth period

by Joe Howley, Page Editor
A fire alarm in the middle of 5b today evacuated students and staff from the building for the remainder of the period.

The alarm was activated at 12:12 by a student accidentally hitting one of the trigger boxes, according to Business Manager Anne Alban.

This alarm follows a trash fire in a bathroom last Thursday and a pair of bomb threats that resulted in an evacuation on Friday. Another bomb threat was made on Monday, but it was deemed not credible and the building was not evacuated.

The all-clear was sounded around 12:26 for students to return to the building.

who deems a bomb threat credible or not? just curious.

Matt- I'll be talking about this in an upcoming story, but the determination of credibility is generally made by the police. The decision to evacuate is made by the administration. In Monday's case, the lt Governor's security personnel and the state police were in the bulding at the time, so they did a check of the building and decided that it was safe.

My thing is that if there was a bomb in the building then could those people who made that decision (and survived) deal with the fact that it was ultimately there fault that all those lives had been lost? What if the friday threat was used to make staff and police think that the monday threat was fake too and thus they would not evacuate the building. If the "bombers thought of this then there would have been a devestatingly large loss because of one decision.

Amanda, it seems much more likely that Monday's threat was a "copycat crime." Besides, it was hardly an arbitrary decision that the police and security personnel made on Monday; they know what they're doing.

I'm gusseing that not creidable ment that the perosn on the other end was either contiously giggling and couldn't stop laughing about thier joke, or they were able to trace the call and find the person and then it became obivous that the whole thing was a prank and a copycat crime.
If it they had evacuated then it is likely that more bomb threats would be called in because it was soo effective. Also it should be pointed out that bomb threats are usally only made when thier isn't a bomb becase that is the only way to make an effective statement about your whatever. If thier is a bomb then it usally is someone else who calls in to warn the people.

Hopefully we can make it between spring and summer break this year without any more evacuations or color-coded emergencies, except drills.

Hopefully the building was actually evacuated this time. (I remember the 5A alarm last year when people in the SAC didn't pay attention.)
