The hazards of seeing "The Dukes of Hazzard"

by Devon Madison, Online Entertainment Editor
"The Dukes of Hazzard" isn't a great movie, or even a very good movie, but it works for some lighthearted fun on a rainy day.

The movie is a remake of the 1970's TV show, "The Dukes of Hazzard." Luke and Bo Duke (Johnny Knoxville and Sean William Scott) are two cousins who live in Hazzard County, Georgia, the small town where they grew up. Along with their cousin, Daisy (Jessica Simpson), and their grandfather, Jesse (Willie Nelson), the family takes on a wild adventure when the meanest man in the county, commissioner Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds), decides to take over the town and turn it into a strip mine. Luke and Bo must convince the people of Hazzard County to skip the big race rally with famous local Billy Pricket (James Roday) and head over to the town hall to try and stop Hogg from taking over their hometown.

The good news: "The Dukes of Hazzard" is easy to follow and packed with action. Whether they are being chased by the deputy, the Atlanta police department, or on the racetrack, the boys are always trying to escape in the General Lee (Bo's precious racing car), and almost always prove successful. The car chases between the police and the General Lee are exciting and even funny. For instance, when running from the campus police in Atlanta, the Dukes get hassled by a bunch of thugs who have quite a bit to say about the Confederate flag painted on the roof of their car. The thugs threaten to beat them up just before the cops come and the Duke boys make a quick getaway.

Bo's girl troubles are another running joke. One of the most humorous parts of the movie is when Luke and Bo Duke go to college in Atlanta to identify the coal samples (Boss Hogg's coal samples for the strip mine). Bo finds his old flame, Annette (Jacqui Maxwell) in her dorm room, and as soon as she greets him, he faints and then regains his composure in a split second. In another scene, Bo finds out that Luke has been involved with Annette long before she left for college and failed to tell Bo the whole time. Bo is mortified, refusing to talk to Luke until he apologizes.

Among the movie's many low points besides the silly plot are Jessica Simpson's inconsistent southern accent and Willie Nelson's dumb jokes. While being shot at and chased by the cops, he asks Luke, "Why is divorce so expensive?" Answer: "Because it's worth it."

Overall, this movie is not one of the greatest films of the century, or even close to being the greatest one of the year. However, if you want to see a movie with corny, tasteless jokes, a couple of hot movie stars and a whole lot of car chases, this movie is for you.

Bo's High School flame was Katie Johnson. Annette was Katie's friend from Australia. Did you watch the movie?
