Coed volleyball earns first win of season

by Payal Patnaik, Online Editor-in-Chief

After losing its first four games, the coed volleyball team won its first match of the season against the Kennedy Cavaliers. In an exciting match that lasted five games, the Cavaliers fell to the Blazers 25-18, 19-25, 22-25, 25-21 and 15-13.

The Blazers had to adjust to the absence of second setter Julie Brice, changing from its normal 6-2 play that uses two setters. Instead, the team ran a 5-1 formation, meaning that there was only one setter on the court for the team.

Eddie Tang stepped up early in the first game, making hard hits that the Cavaliers scrambled to return to no avail. Junior co-captain and setter Christie Lin made many sets that Tang completed strongly. Blair received the serve after Kennedy turned over the ball and Tang started a four-point serving streak that ended at 6-1. After the Cavaliers regained possession of the ball, they earned four straight points and tied the Blazers at 6-6. Blair was able to forge ahead because of Kennedy's lack of communication and missed returns. Senior Austin Fang increased the lead with strong serves and two consecutive back row hits. Junior Felicia Olawuni made a strong ace and another good serve, but Blair could not keep up its momentum due to communication problems of its own. As Blair battled for its final point, a highly intense volley ensued, and Blair emerged victorious, 25-18. This was the first game of the season that the team received over 20 points and won.

Coed volleyball performed differently in the second game. Kennedy took the early lead, and Blair struggled to keep up with the score. Blair began to lose control and hit the balls out. Serves by Tang and Olawuni enabled the Blazers to catch up 8-8, but Blair then lost a few points due to bad communication and weak defense. When the score reached 10-15, Blair coach John Mott called a timeout for the team to regroup and focus. Despite Blair's hustle to the ball, the team lost the second game, 19-25.

During the final point of the second game, Tang fell and injured his shoulder blade. Although he still made many key points, his injury kept him from playing hard. "Every time I took a swing, I was pinching muscle with my shoulder blade," he explained.

The third game had an indecisive beginning. For the first point, Lin set the ball, but there was no one there to spike. Both teams exchanged points after notable offensive plays and defensive miscues. After a 20-20 tie, Kennedy pulled ahead due to Blair's weak blocks and defense, winning the third game, 22-25.

Blair maintained an early lead in the fourth game. Due to coed's serves and stronger blocks, the Blazers were leading 8-3. However, Kennedy caught up to Blair because of coed's unforced errors. After being tied at 15-15, Tang's easy tip turned the tides after a murky exchange. Coed built up a momentum that Kennedy's defense could not handle. Although Blair made a few flimsy mistakes at the end of the game, it had enough of a lead to win the fourth game, 25-21.

Coed's hopes were high as it advanced to the fifth game; this was the closest the team had gotten to a win this season. The fifth game kicked off with renewed Blazer energy. Wendolyn Quintanilla started off the game with a strategic serve, and Tang ended the volley with an easy tip. Blair lost its early lead at 5-2 due to passing errors and a defense unable to cover spots on the court. Kennedy caught up with Blair and both teams battled for each point, exchanging possessions and strong plays. After a 13-13 tie in a game of 15, Kennedy called a time out. After the timeout, the Blair's front-line players had fast hands that disabled Kennedy's defense. Blair won the final game, 15-13.

Kennedy coach Lindsey Fisher thought that the game was intense and the teams were equally matched. "It was a back and forth battle and both teams plays very hard. Unfortunately, Blair got the better of us."

Mott was excited at his team's improvement that he has seen since its last match and was equally impressed by Blair's quick adjustment to a 5-1 setup. "I couldn't be more happy. Last game we started to put things together. Everyone's playing as a team."

Lin thought that the team notably improved from previous games. "Today we had great hustle and teamwork, though we need to improve on our accuracy and consistency. We were pumped up and ready to face Kennedy," she said enthusiastically.

Coed volleyball's next game is on Tuesday at Northwood.

So you write about a victory by the volleyball team, yet you never even write one for the undefeated tennis team!?!?!?
