Girls soccer dominates, wins 11-0 in first game

Sept. 12, BLAZER STADIUM-

The Blair girls' junior varsity soccer team defeated Wheaton yesterday in dominating fashion, winning 11-0. The team's first home game, scheduled for Sept. 5, was postponed due to rain, making yesterday's game the proud season opener for the freshmen and sophomore team.

Sophomore Susie Branson, Blair's captain, started the game off well with a goal early in the first half. Consecutive goals by teammates Jeanette Chavez (who scored twice) and Theresa Bort gave the Blazers a 4-0 lead over Wheaton going into half time.

Branson noted that the game was a great opportunity for the team's newcomers to play in a game, saying, "The game was really exciting as it was a good chance to see the skills of my teammates, especially those on defense."

Blair's defense was certainly effective, as the ball rarely crossed midfield throughout the duration of the game. Erica Horne, Cara Mayo, and Paige Munger were among players who contributed to the strength of the defense.

Despite the evident enthusiasm brimming from the team on the field, Branson is quick to admit that the Blazers made several preventable mistakes. "Our playing got messy as everyone was goal-hungry and took some wild shots," she said. The team, led by Coach Tanner, hopes to improve their ball handling skills and open up the field more in the next few games.

Blazers' level of skill surpassed the slow and sloppy Wheaton team, bringing the final score to an emphatic 11-0. The real test of strength for this spirited team will come on Friday, Sept. 15 when the Blazers will take on Churchill at Churchill. "I think the Churchill game will be the wake-up call that our team needs and a good challenge to see how our defense fares," Branson said.

The JV Girls' soccer team's next home game will be on Tuesday Sept 26 at 5 p.m when the Blazers take on Quince Orchard.
