China

July 5 – A bomb exploded in a karaoke parlor and bathhouse in northeast China killing 25 people and injuring 33 more. The owner of the parlor, Qu Hua, who died in the attack, had more than a ton of TNT stored in the basement.

July 7 – China sentenced Cao Wenzhuang, a department director at the State Food and Drug Administration, to death on charges for accepting bribes and neglecting official duties. The sentence comes with a two year reprieve and if the convict is deemed to have reformed it may be reduced to life in prison.

India

July 8 – 14 Hindus, including a police officer, were sentenced to life in prison for a 1989 attack killing 116 Muslim men, women and children. The 14 sentenced were part of a mob that used swords and daggers to hack the Muslims to death.

Iraq

July 4 – Assassinations, a suicide car bomb and roadside bombs took the lived of at least 46 Iraqis and two American soldiers in Iraq.

July 7 – Iraq hanged a suspected member of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia for an August 2003 bomb attack, which killed Shiite leader and cleric Ayatollah Muhammad Bakr al-Hakim.

July 8 – Suicide attacks across Iraq, including a massive truck bombing, killed at least 144 people, including 8 U.S. troops. The violence resulted in one of the highest death tolls in the Iraq War.

Nigeria

July 6 – Nigerian militants abducted the three-year-old daughter, Margaret Hill, of British expatriate, Mike Hill, outside of her school.

July 8 – Nigerian gunmen released British toddler, Hill, to her parents after she was kidnapped in the country's south. The child was among two other victims seized and returned after a few days with no ransom paid.

United Kingdom

June 28 – After a decade as Prime Minister, Tony Blair yielded his role to Gordon Brown, who promised to "let the work of change begin."
