Shrubs and shoes

by Poorna Natarajan, Online Staff Writer
Our beloved President Bush ducked. No, he did not duck away from his pathetic, dismal presidency or from his creepy vice president, but ducked away for two size-10 shoes hurled at him during a press conference in Iraq on Sunday.

The shoe-thrower, who is now an appreciated hero in the Middle East, was Iraqi journalist Muntadar al-Zeidi. "This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog," al-Zeidi yelled in Arabic. Then, al-Zeidi threw the shoe with amazing aim, and threw another while yelling, "this is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq." President Bush, however, agilely ducked the shoes like a true Texas Ranger.

Al-Zeidi committed a misdemeanor, and I completely condemn his "shoe throwing." But his words were so passionate and so full of frustration that it showed the intense hatred that Iraqis generally share against America.

Whenever the current administration mentions "the war on terror," a now-clichéd fear mongering term, I shudder and cry inside. What "war?" This country occupied another country with little international support, while killing countless Iraqi citizens and several American soldiers. The cause of this massacre was the urgent necessity of finding the alleged "weapons of mass destruction" that President Bush eloquently reiterated in his press conferences.

The unnecessary occupation of Iraq was a mistake - there were no "weapons of mass destruction" – hopefully, most Americans recognize that by now. But our president and his administration don't find the occupation wrong, and that fact is alarming, frightening and disheartening. They'll leave their positions in January having never made things right.

On Dec. 12, President Bush ironically explained to graduates of Texas A&M University how character ultimately counts in life. "If you can go home at night, look in the mirror and be satisfied that you have done what is right, you will pass the only test that matters," he said. If President Bush was referring to himself, I only wonder what test he passed and whether he has a "sole" after killing so many lives.

This is something that all of the western news media covering this incident tends to do--so I'm not sure why I'm posting this here, instead of somewhere else--but it saddens me that we keep making light of "shoe-throwing". al-Zeidi was taken outside and beaten bloody, and is probably now being tortured for what he did. Yes, it was illegal, but it was an entirely serious act of martyrdom. We understand what the insulting symbolism of shoes is in the Arab world, but we can't seem to make the next step and recognize that for al-Zeidi, throwing shoes was tantamount to the Americans' self-immolations in protest of the Vietnam War. Throwing those shoes was a serious act, not a silly one--too bad we can't stop laughing (and making bad puns) long enough to recognize that.

Wow... I can see why the Washington Post sponsors this…
This is what we're teaching our children? I bet you swallowed Obama hook line and sinker, and now you're asking yourself why he's doing everything the exact same way Bush did... "Change you Can Believe in" huh? Iraqis do not share your hatred of America; they actually like America quite a bit. You obviously have no experience from which to speak, being a child. So I will forgive your innate hatred for America, the Country that gives you the freedom to write such drivel.
The way in which I came upon this page was researching trees for a client in Iraq. Unlike your caricature of Iraq, most are hardworking peaceful citizens who are terrorized by religious zealots and tribal henchmen. They not only welcomed America, but are terrified of the day when we are gone. Why don’t you ask the man for whom I’m sure you campaigned ardently for: why we still have 50k troops and over 150k civilian contractors there in Iraq? I thought that war was over? And more troops in Afghanistan? And Gitmo is still open? What? And now he just killed Usama in Cold blood? Sounds like Bush Jr. to me… Hell I may even vote for him next time.
