Anaheim Angels win the World Series

by Nora Toiv, Page Editor
2002 World Series results:

Game 7: Anaheim Angels 4, San Francisco Giants 1

Angels win World Series for the first time. See other game results below.

The World Series is a California series; San Francisco Giants versus the Anaheim Angels. I think that the Angels will win the World Series. The Angels have shown themselves to be a more powerful, driven team. They had a somewhat easy time beating the Yankees and the Twins. The Giants had some trouble with the Braves and played some tough games against the Cardinals.

The most memorable moments were announced at Game 3. Cal Ripken's game streak won first place as the most memorable monent. Here is a list of the top 10.

1. Cal Ripken's game streak
2: Hank Aaron's 715th homer, 1974.
3: Jackie Robinson breaks MLB's color line, 1947.
4: Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa race to overtake Roger Maris, 1998.
5: Lou Gehrig bids farewell, 1939.
6: Pete Rose passes Ty Cobb as the hit-leader, 1985.
7: Ted Williams posts the last .400 average, 1941
8: Joe DiMaggio hits in 56 straight, 1941.
9: Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit homer starts Dodgers to World Series upset, 1988.

What do you think is the most memorable baseball moment? Please feel free to post comments on the top ten. Also feel free to post predictions and comments on the World Series.

Nora How about some commentary to get responses.
  • Ben on October 3, 2002
i am so glad that the yankees lost... i am a red sox fan

Need to dump the analysis by Nora. Out of date. If we do that again, we need someone to add some support for their reasoning.
  • Eddie Nickels on October 7, 2002
How about some real analysis of the playoffs. Maybe Nora can't do that since her knowledge of baseball is clearly limited to the Yankees. So find somebody else on the staff because this playoffs report is brief, unsubstantiated and provides zero insight into the current status of the playoffs. Sorry if I'm coming off as rude, but I would expect much better out of Chips.

i am so mad that the yankees lost. but there is always next year. And I'm very happy that the diamondbacks lost. Cuz they didn't deserve it. well bout 2 bounce 05 run it. Don't hate.

It is so great for baseball that both the Yankees and now the Braves have been eliminated in the early rounds. Those two teams have "hogged" post-season play during the past decade. It's great to see some Cinderella teams with lower payrolls have a shot. Economic sanity needs to be restored to baseball, and the results of the first round of the playoffs will be a step in that direction.

4 upsets in baseball's division series! The Nets made the NBA finals, The patriots won the Superbowl last year, Terps Football won the ACC, and this year the Rams are 0-5. So many suprises so little time!

In my defense, Eddie Nickels aka Ben Penn, the article was not meant to dive that deeply into the playoffs because they do not relate too much to Blair. As for my predictions, they made alot of sense at the time considering the Yankees have gotten to the World Series 5 out of the past 6 years. So please in the future try using your real name and don't hide behind your little alias.

The Yankees are awful. Awful. Nomar could beat up Jeter any day. Go Blair Football.
  • Eddie Nickels on October 16, 2002
Ben Penn??? Sorry, that name does not ring a bell. But as far as your defense goes, I had no objections to you predicting the Yankees to win the World Series. Disregarding your bias, it was indeed a valid prediction because of the Yankees hitting, pitching staff and postseason experience, and nobody knew Anaheim would be overachieving like they have been. However, I must take objection to your statement about the baseball playoffs not relating to Blair. If they don't relate to Blair, then why have you felt the need to cover them at all? You have covered them because you realize that even though no Blair graduates are participating in the playoffs, many Blair students do care about the playoffs. And if you want to just post the scores, then I suppose that is fine. But when you make a prediction, you must back it up. Nora, I still have the utmost respect for you as a reporter.

Actually Ed, I am the starting DH in game 1 for the Giants and therefore, it is relevant for Chips to cover.
  • the blair blazer on October 18, 2002
sorry ben but i'm going to have to disagree with you- nora's prediction was indeed invalid- just because the yankees have won in the past means absolout zilche. infact, if you follow their season/post season records you'll notice that since 96 the yankees have gone down hill. sorry nora, angels played better ball this year.
  • KC on October 28, 2002
hey, i added the last two games to the list. haven't changed nora's commentary cause she doesn't seem to want anyone interfering with it.

WHY hasn't anyone been talking about the Memorable Moments? Look at:

6: Pete Rose passes Ty Cobb as the hit-leader, 1985.

Pete Rose was banned by former Commissioner of MLB Bart Giamatti for BETTING on baseball as manager of the Cincinnatti Reds in the late 1980's. Bud Selig, current commissioner, was Bart's sidekick. He promised to uphold the ban on Rose. However, a few years back, he allowed Rose on the field to be part of the celebration of best players or something. THIS year, Selig lifted the ban yet again to allow Rose on the field for Game 4. He made 6th on the list! I say that Rose's ban should be lifted because he did the time. Come on, people, the crowd was chanting Hall of Fame! Hall of Fame! Over and over again. Other thoughts, Blazers?
