No fan's land

Three, two, one - BEEP. The gym erupts with victorious cheers as the stands struggle under the weight of jumping fans who are supporting their fellow classmates and school. Or at least, it should have.

Attendance at sports events has been lacking, including at a recent girls' basketball game.

As the varsity boys' basketball team celebrated their win against the Gaithersburg Trojans on a memorable senior night, their efforts went virtually unheard as students and teachers yet again found excuses to not come and support their teams and to say farewell to the hardworking senior players. The same was true for the girls' basketball team during several of their games.

Unfortunately, lack of attendance is a common occurrence at Blair's sporting events. Throughout the seasons, Blair's large, inviting stands are a vision of disappointment as the empty benches are a constant reminder to players and coaches that their hard work and practice is not receiving the proper recognition it deserves.

I completely understand and can relate to hectic schedules as students and teachers try to balance school, homework, extracurriculars, outside jobs and other responsibilities. But I also know everyone needs a break. So instead of taking that time zoning out in front of a mindless television or video game, grab a few other friends and support your school!

You don’t have to be a cheerleader to start some energizing chants; the whole point is to just get out there and have fun. Whether you dress in red, bring pom-poms or just come as you are, your presence will always be appreciated by the players and the fans. The more people at a game, the more fun for both you and the players!

With your student ID, entrance to school events is a mere $3. I can handle missing games trying to juggle all of the events in life, but I find it hard to believe that you can't come up with a measly three dollars to come and support your friends. If necessary, have a friend lend you some money, wear a sign outside the gates or dance for the dough!

It's so important for the players to feel the support and encouragement of their peers, especially when they're having a hard season or playing a tough team. That being said, don't wait for one of Blair's teams to make it to states to attend your first game. Support all teams, whether they are enjoying a winning streak or enduring a particularly rough season.

Blair teams work relentlessly hard both in and out of practice to perform to the best of their abilities, and try to represent our school in the best light. Thank you to the few loyal fans and loving parents who take time out of their day to appreciate their friend's and family's achievements. For the rest of us, the least we can do to applaud our athletes' performances and efforts is to attend some of their games once in awhile. So get out there and get your cheer on, Blazers!

The thing is people rarely even know when games are held. The SGA made posters that are barely legible and hastily done. Games are only announced the day of, once people have already made plans for that night. It's incredibly unfair how Sweeney Todd has been mentioned EVERY SINGLE DAY on infoflow and not a single announcement about the upcoming varsity and junior varsity sports games have been announced. For heaven's sake ALL VARSITY SPORTS ARE PLAYING AT 7PM. Why not give people the knowledge to make a decision between watching your classmates put on a play or watching other classmates demonstrate how hard they have worked in the off season? It's a horrible way to repay those who work really hard to represent this school.

the problem isnt people not knowing when the games are but just the whole attitude in this area of the country. people don't have pride in their school's sports teams. People don't care about sports as much and its because blair is full of magnets, cappies, and gangsters that don't have any care in the world at attending a sporting event.

You can't force people to care.

I think that we have a major school spirit gap in MOCO. if you look at the up county teams there is a definite dedication to athletics not only from the student body but from the administration and the community as a whole. The main problem i see in this area is the Down County Consortium. High schools in the DCC can't build programs like up county schools with consistent feeder middle schools can. A elementary schooler in Olney watching a Sherwood football game knows that 8 years down the road he will be playing on that same field. In the DCC there is no such certainty. If we want good school spirit around athletics, we need good teams, to get good teams you need to build a core unit prior to high school, to do that you have to scrap the DCC. until that happens Blair with continue to lose games and the Spirit gap.
