SMOB candidate Q&A

by Kevin Teng, Online News Editor and Emily Hsiao, Online Managing Editor
As April comes to a close, MCPS students are getting hyped up for another election of their own - Student Member of the Board (SMOB) elections. And of course, the most important thing to do before checking off the ballot on April 29 is to get to know the SMOB candidates. Since it might be difficult to reach the two candidates personally as they are busily campaigning around the county, Silver Chips Online has just the tool to help voters make the right choice on election day. In an exclusive Q&A, the candidates, juniors Tim Hwang of Thomas Wootton High School and Jiayi Yang of Richard Montgomery High School, reveal everything from their platforms and stands on important issues to their personally preferred movies and books.

Q: What are your five biggest strengths that will make you a good SMOB?

TH:

1. Experience: I have served as your Vice President and former Chief of Staff of MCR-SGA. I served as the Educational Liaison to the State Board of Education and served in numerous capacities in the Democratic Party's leadership including local, state, regional and national directorship positions. I've also served on theMCPS Curriculum Advisory Committee and worked on Race Relations on the Taskforce for Race and Social Issues. No other candidate has done more to actively fight for your rights or become active in politics throughout his career.

2. Personal relationships in politics and ability to change the culture of the Board: You need a SMOB who has a good working relationship with the County Council, the Maryland General Assembly and the United States Congress who will advocate for your rights, your budget and your interests.

3. Managerial ability: I've served as the CEO/President of my own non-profit organization with over 200 employees worldwide, over 500 volunteers and an expansive budget. I also serve as the National Director of Operations and Development for a political consulting firm and a coordinator for numerous political campaigns.

4. Good and practical grasp of the issues. The SMOB should be devoting their time to the big issues of the time: fighting for environmentally friendly schools, keeping the programs that benefit the students, closing the achievement gap, making students lives easier through a reduction in bureaucracy and a reform of the GT, LC and grading policy

5. Passion for the public education system: I believe in the fact that every student should have equal opportunity to learn and become successful in their lives. But to do that, we need a strong public education system and we need engaged and passionate people who love the public education system to be running our schools

JY:
1. Fresh and innovative ideas: I'm able to draw from a lot of diverse experiences and activities outside of the political realm. This allows me to develop new ideas and fresh perspectives. For example, I know what it is like to be a student who feels alienated from the SMOB. That leads me to the next [strength].

2. Ability to identify with students: I've worked with students with all sorts of interests, so I believe that enables me to effectively represent my constituents, the students. I want to ensure that it is the students' voices that I am bringing to the board, as the one board member specifically elected by the students, for the students.

3. Dedication: SMOB would be my number one, top priority. If elected, I would make sacrifices such as leaving the IB [International Baccalaureate] program at RM and taking a half-day courseload, among other schedule rearrangements. My devotion to the position would be absolutely essential to achieving the goals I have set.

4. Open-mindedness: I want to be able to get all the perspectives on an issue, to make sure I am most accurately representing my constituents.

5. Modesty: Humility is really important to me in a position of elected office. I want to emphasize that I am a student first and would be most loyal to the students. I won't forget that I have been a student ofMCPS for 11 years of my life.

Q: What are your five biggest weaknesses that will hinder you from being a good SMOB?

TH:
1. Being on the leadership in the Democratic Party, I am undoubtedly very partisan which obviously has its drawbacks.

2. Some people describe me as somewhat demanding and assertive, qualities that may alienate certain prominent political members such as the teachers union, the administrators union or the SEIU [Service Employees International Union].

3. Many leaders are very well known for their big picture thinking - their visionary concepts that revolutionized the world. Unfortunately, I sometimes have a problem with having a big attention to details.

4. I am extremely critical of myself. I hold myself to high expectations and if I fail I am ultimately crushed even if it is a very small result.

5. I have never really had time to get heavily involved with school-sponsored activities. Constant calls to travel around the country for my non-profit organization, for the Democratic Party and different candidates have required me to abandon many of my jobs in school sponsored clubs and activities.

JY:
1. I'm not a morning person.

2. My car is a mess.

3. I'm brutally honest.

4. I am an English commentary's worst enemy.

5. I listen to Britney Spears. And I like it.

Q: What is the first thing you would do if you were elected to be SMOB?

TH: One day out from Election Day I will begin to completely restructure what is currently known as the SMOB Advisory Committee. I hope to build a sustainable organization that can handle the press, lobby for legislation and maintain a good relationship with all the schools. This would mean recruiting staff and representatives at every high school and middle school in the county, creating a coalition of club leaders across the county and setting up a sustainable online organization utilizing tools of communication to mobilize students and get quick feedback on current issues.

JY: The first thing I would do is set up my network of communication. I would ensure that the framework for my action plan for eliminating the communication gap is set up by the start of my term so no time is lost between being elected and keeping the students informed. I would continue with the grassroots representative system I have formed for my campaign. I [am] proud to say that I actually currently have at least one representative at all 25 high schools in Montgomery County Public Schools. In addition, I would make sure that I am reaching out to as many students as I can by utilizingFacebook (I wouldn't abandon my group as soon as I was elected), Twitter and my website at jiayi4smob.org.

Q: Who is your favorite politician?

TH: Barack H. Obama. ... Barack Obama is the one politician that was able to unite his party and is working to bring about change by changing the way politics works in Washington.

JY: Henry Clay and his American System.

Q: Who is your least favorite politician?

TH: I would probably have to say Rudy Giuliani or Rod Blagojevich. [Giuliani] is a man who completely hates the idea of public education and would like to see failed students fall into abject poverty and see to it that only a few number of students receive a world class education.Blagojevich is pretty self explanatory. Politics should be ethical - not run by people like Blagojevich.

JY: Bigoted senators such as Chris Buttars.

Q: Who is your role model?

TH: Muhammad Yunus. This man is the winner of the 2006 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his pioneer work in the field of microcredit. I would love to come up with the next innovative idea to revolutionize the way we fight poverty in this world by bringing capitalism to those who need it the most.

JY: Great philanthropists such as Rockefeller.

Q: Which famous person are you most similar to?

TH: I feel that I am most similar to Bill Gates ...for his ideas and his passion to help the needy. I want to bring innovative techniques to the office of the Student Member of the Board of Education and I want to utilize this position and my successes in order help the people most in need.

JY: I think if I had to choose, I identify most with the current SMOB, Q Malik. I think we share a lot of the same goals and desire to give back to our school district. In addition, just as she was at one point, I am running to be your student board member.

Q: Why did you choose to run for SMOB?

TH: I've moved from inner-city Lansing to inner-city Baltimore and finally to Montgomery County and I can attest to the fact that there is no county with a more diverse population, a stronger education system or a livelier culture than Montgomery County. I chose to run for SMOB ...because I believe that the next year will be hard, but will provide our county with the opportunity to become more efficient, acknowledge the influence of the students and change the way the politics of this county operates.

JY: I chose to run for SMOB out of a desire to make a difference in the school system I've gone through my entire life. Too often I've seen complacency or complaint without action over issues of student advocacy. We are very fortunate to attend schools in a county where theSMOB has a voice on the board, has voting rights and holds a real responsibility to advocate for and represent the students.

Q: In your opinion, what were the most successful actions of Quratul-Ann Malik in office? What were the least?

TH:Q ran on the platform of reducing school fees for all students. She delivered that promise to her constituents when the Parent's Coalition along with several groups including the Board of Education testified to the Montgomery County delegation regarding school fees. Thanks to her and many of our elected officials' efforts our school system is closer to a free public education.... Her least successful actions were in keeping up to date with the students. Though she actively sought out the opinions of several countySGA and state SGA members her search for communication stopped at the student leaders.

JY: Q has worked really hard to lower fees for students, especially in the current budget crisis. In addition, I worked with her to draft a bill officially allowing students the right to cell phones,iPods and other electronic devices during lunch. I love Q, so I don't want to bash her term, but I think one thing she could have done better is staying transparent and connected to the students.

Q: If you could do anything right now, what would you do?

TH: I'd probably be hanging out with some friends in DC. I never get tired of seeing and reminiscing in the presence of the men that we have cast in iron and set in stone.

JY: Be sworn in as your 32nd Student Member of the Montgomery County Board of Education.

Q: If you were on a deserted island, what three things would you bring?

TH: I'd probably bring a computer with satellite access to Internet (I'm sure some Blair Magnet students have figured out a way to do this!) to stay connected, myiPod to play some games and listen to some good music and a good magazine most likely Time or Newsweek to fill up my time. Though, this is assuming that food and water won't be a problem to find.

JY: 1. Food

2. Friends

3. A yacht

Q: What should students think as they read your name in the voting booth?

TH: Students should ask themselves: who advocates for the policies that I support? Who has a proven track record of serving me? And who has the ability to advocate for the things I want?

JY: "I know where I'm putting in my funny name vote."

Q: What is your favorite movie? TV show? Color? Animal? Car? Place? Book? Song? Restaurant? Food?

TH: Movie: V for Vendetta
TV Show: The West Wing, The Office, The Colbert Report
Color: Cerulean
Animal: That same dog that was in Bolt (the Disney Movie) or a Tiger
Car: Anything made by Ford, Chrysler or GM because in these trying times we need to support the American GDP by buying American-made goods.
Place: Capitol Hill
Book: A Hope in the Unseen - Ron Suskind (a book about a low income DC student rising through the crumbling public education system to go to an ivy league university) or Banker to the Poor - MuhammadYunus (a book about Muhammad Yunus's amazing journey in providing a bank for the poor)
Song: Stronger - Kanye West
Restaurant: Chipotle
Food: Probably a steak burrito with tomato, corn and lettuce; a number 10 meal at McDonald's; or a large cheese pizza at Domino's

JY: Movie: Pulp Fiction
TV Show: The Office
Color: Green
Animal: Turtle
Car: Mazda Protege '98
Place: Bed
Book: Cracking the AP Calculus AB & BC Exams, 2009 Edition
Song: "Love Story" by Taylor Swift
Restaurant: Applebees
Food: Ice cream

Q: If you could be an animal (other than a human), which one would you be?

TH: Ranked as the #1 favorite animal by Animal Planet - I share the sentiments of other people in wanting to be a tiger. On the surface tigers are defensive, fierce and assertive animals but on the inside they are humbling, noble and judicious exactly the qualities that I would like to exhibit for the students of Montgomery County if elected as Student Member of the Board.

JY: A hawk, because I would have a great vision for where our schools need to go.

Q: Where would you go for the perfect vacation? What would you do there?

TH: I would most likely to go visit Rome, Constantinople (Istanbul), Alexandria, Cairo, Chang-An and Xi-an. These were the centers of civilization at the dawn of the human race and I think it would incredibly cool to visit the government capitals of the Ancient World. I would probably take in the sights, look at some artifacts and learn more about how these people ran their government. Of course, a vacation to Orlando in Disney World and Universal Studios wouldn't be bad either.

JY: I would go around the world in 80 days and do everything there is to do on this Earth.

Q: What do you aspire to be in the future after you graduate from high school?

TH: A college graduate. Many of us take going to college for granted but I hope to accomplish this feat, go on to law school and work in the public sector as a public servant.

JY: My future is uncertain but after I graduate from high school I'd like to attend some form of higher education. If that's not a possibility, I could become a rock star or win the lottery.

Q: Should Miley Cyrus choose Hannah Montana or Miley as her identity?

TH: Miley should be Miley because that is who she is, she is not putting on a show for anyone when she is Miley. Just like me being the SMOB is not putting on a show just to get elected. Politics isn't about the candidate it's about the people. This isn't a show - this is real and substantive ideas forMCPS.

JY: Hannah Montana is more attractive than Miley Cyrus!

    LOLLL jiayi is hilarious!!!
    • Girrafe36 on April 28, 2009 at 7:01 PM
Jiayi might be funny, but is that really the kind of person you want speaking for you. Tim might not be funny but look at how quickly and fluently he is able to answer these questions. When in front of adults trying to present a new idea you have to be able to formulate good advanced proposals. They care less about your sense of humor. It's all about being able to give the students what they want. Jiayi might be funny and make you laugh for a second but in the long run when you don't get what you asked for you won't be smiling anymore. Tim might not make you laugh but when he gets you what you asked for you will be smiling. Think about it in the long run Tim will help make your school experience a better one.

Do you really want a robot with no personality to represent you on the Board? Politics is about being personable and forming relationships.
        • re:re:Girrafe36 on May 3, 2009 at 1:07 AM
I completely agree its about forming relationships. Hence, the kid with more experience working in politics should get the job. i bet he doesn't even know who sits on the board.

It doesn't even matter. Tim pwned 4/29.

Being humorous has stuff to do with being a crowd pleaser, which in turn leads to stuff being done. Character has a lot to do with leadership.
  • asdf on April 27, 2009 at 10:43 PM

  • this is silly on April 27, 2009 at 11:05 PM
What seems to constantly bug me about campaigns of SMOB candidates is this - THEY HAVE NO REAL POWER! Especially when they state that they will try to change the budget, they are making promises they cannot possibly keep. SMsOB (Student Members of the Board) do not have the ability to vote on issues concerning the budget or school closings. Though they may try to sway other board members in a certain direction, it is dishonest to make promises to the constituency about budget changes.
Please, candidates, run a campaign based off of actual plans, not off of a wish to include something cool on your transcript.

I think jiayi has a little too much confidence... dont try to be funny, actually say something that people will appreciate and value
    • anonymous on April 28, 2009 at 11:49 PM
um. i appreciate and value it. and i bet a bunch of other people do too. honestly, we all need a break from all the seriousness. personally i respond better to the non-lecture type because if they lecture, i space out. if they can catch my attention, i'll listen better. and therefore, he'd get a better response, and so it'll be like effective.
  • chemman92 on April 27, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Jiayi answers are more personable and they identify well with us students (read: funny), but you can tell he's serious about the job when he needs to be.

That's exactly the kind of guy I like and will vote for. I, Liberal, endorse Jiayi Yang for Student Member of the Board.

I know both candidates personally and Tim is most definitely pretentious and arrogant. Jiayi is a little more down to earth.
  • Jayne on April 27, 2009 at 11:50 PM
Jiayi, get serious. You think that you're funny and smart. But you're not. SMOB deserves your respect and is not something to mock. Some of your answers fail to address the question. Do you expect to carry this kind of attitude onto the Board?
    • Sec'10 on April 28, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Jayne, while you do address Jiayi's "joke" answers, he answered the personal questions with his own humor. He gets serious when he needs to, and is a very amiable, funny guy other times.
  • Senior on April 27, 2009 at 11:51 PM
"Managerial ability?" Really, Tim? Who are you going to be managing as SMOB?

    No one cares about SMOB...
  • hm.. tim? on April 27, 2009 at 11:56 PM
the thing is that tim seems like he would be far too busy to be a good smob, u know? jiayi has already said that he would make some pretty important sacrifices (like ib .. and that stuff looks really good on college applications, so we know he is not doing this whole smob thing for colleges)

and i think it is good that he is friendly. tim seems too pretentious.. would he really be the best interest for students?

and i have heard that a lot of tim's qualifications are sort of empty.. im not sure tho. a middle schooler also told me that he said schhols would start charging for school buses and make them wear uniforms if he wasnt elected which seems like made up but iono
  • hungry on April 28, 2009 at 12:03 AM
wow i feel like i know jiayi a lot better than tim
  • chemman92 on April 28, 2009 at 12:30 AM
Jiayi just doesn't get it... Maybe he'd be a cool friend, but is he really the best person for the job? Tim isn't much better, but at least he's serious about the issues and knows what's going on... I think when you choose the lesser of two evils it's probably Tim.
    • Sec'10 on April 28, 2009 at 9:00 PM
Chemman92, you seem to be judging Jiayi's ability to be serious through this one Q+A article. Jiayi answered the personal questions with his own casual humor. That doesn't mean he won't take the job seriously. He's serious when he needs to be, but wants to also convey how easy-going he can be and how he can better to relate to us students.

In direct response to your first few words, Jiayi does "get it." He plans to drop the IB program if elected, which is a big sacrifice he's making if he wins so that he can focus on his position.
  • Re: Jayne, chemman92 on April 28, 2009 at 7:51 AM
Did you guys read the article? Jiayi answered the all questions about the issues seriously and didn't "mock" the position of SMOB at all. Questions like "Q: Should Miley Cyrus choose Hannah Montana or Miley as her identity?" aren't serious questions and warrant equally silly answers that let the students "get to know" who he is (see the headline).

Tim just proved he has no personality.
  • Re: punny on April 28, 2009 at 7:54 AM
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, so true
  • will vote on April 28, 2009 at 11:55 AM
I think it is pretty obvious that Jiayi doesn't care. He made a joke out the questions where Tim actually took time to think about and write good replies. If this was an adult running for school board they would not stand a chance after this got published.

Tim is clearly the best candidate to be our next SMOB. He has the experience and know-how to get things done; something that Jiayi lacks.

After watching the "meet the candidates" video I saw that Jiayi really didn't know what he was talking about. While I agree Tim is not the most exciting person in the world I saw a student that doesn't just want power (whatever little power SMOB my bring) but he is someone that really want to represent the students of MCPS. Don't think about someone who would be cool to party with on the weekends when you go to vote. Think about the student that will do the best job of representing you on the school board.
    • me on April 28, 2009 at 9:33 PM
jaiyi does care he came to my school (roberto Clemente) and he WAS serious he is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool
  • someone on April 28, 2009 at 1:06 PM
Knowing both, I think both of them are dedicated and want the job for purposes other than college resume padding. However, Jiayi is less pretentious than Tim about it. Also, I don't know about Jiayi but a lot of Tim's "qualifications" do really seem like empty fluff. I mean...taskforce on race and social issues? they get together and eat pizza and talk...and that's pretty much it...
    • chemman92 on April 28, 2009 at 4:50 PM
oh and like jiayi doesn't have fluff? come on... captain of the drumline and black belt in tae kwon do? Let's look at the facts here, Tim has actually done more for this county than jiayi has in his entire life. You're discrediting his work as VP of MCR-SGA, his work on the Democratic Party, and his non-profit.
      • someone on April 28, 2009 at 7:50 PM
I'm familiar with MCR-SGA, Tim and the Democratic Party, and his non-profit, and I can tell you he has accomplished nothing with each.
      • YOU on April 28, 2009 at 8:58 PM
        CHEMMAN92, GTFO
      • Sec'10 on April 28, 2009 at 9:04 PM
chemman- Does it really matter that Tim has done more for the county? Jiayi isn't a worse candidate for the position just because Tim has done more.

Also, how do you classify his drumline and TKD as fluff? Martial arts and percussion are two of Jiayi's favorite hobbies. Tim's credentials are impressive, but there are just so many that he doesn't seem to value each as much as Jiayi values his activities.
        • 2010 on April 28, 2009 at 11:16 PM
um if you've ever been to a OpFly meeting (which i'm sure you haven't...), you can see how dedicated Tim is and how much value he puts into it. Tim works really hard and does what he likes (wants to give back and help those in poverty)
          • Sec'10 on April 28, 2009 at 11:56 PM
You seem to be missing my point. Yes I'm sure Tim is very interested in Operation Fly, but look how many things he commits himself to. It's near impossible to value each and every one and really invest yourself into each as much as you'd like. I'm sure he devotes a lot of time to activities like OpFly, but as for the others I feel like he only gets himself involved to say he participated.

I also seem to get this impression that Tim is more a 35 year old living in a a 17 year old body. Of course his credentials are very impressive, but there's a point where too much is just too much. I feel like us students can relate more to Jiayi because he's a better representation of the typical MCPS student. Electing Tim would be like electing a normal member of the MCPS board and not a fellow student that can really represent us and know us.

I'm not trying to put down Tim. I have met and talked to him and he is a genuinely friendly and responsible guy. But as for SMOB goes, I feel that Jiayi would be better because he's kind of a culmination of what an MCPS student is. I also think Tim wouldn't have enough time to fully devote himself to SMOB unlike Jiayi.
  • anonymous on April 28, 2009 at 4:04 PM
hahahaha who does this Tim guy think he is?

SMOB doesn't get to do *that* much and you're neither starting a movement nor Barack Obama. Get real. Also all your experience works against you because a) you're a ROBOT and b) SMOB is actually a time commitment and at least Jiayi is willing to sacrifice IB, which shouldnt be taken lightly

Sure Jiayi was funny, but he answered the questions about actual policy seriously. (who quotes animal planet favorite animal polls?!?!)

wow this really reaffirms my hope that jiayi wins tomorrow
  • Student on April 28, 2009 at 4:30 PM
Hahaha, this is too funny. Jiayi is definitely more of a human; Tim is made out of cardboard and is run by little motors inside. I'm voting for Jiayi.
  • chemman92 (RM kid) on April 28, 2009 at 5:00 PM
I'm sorry but I don't think this is fair for many of you to be hating on Tim. I've known Tim since middle school (we went to Frost together) and I've known jiayi since 9th grade and I don't think Tim is either pretentious or arrogant. Anyone who has spent 5 minutes with tim would describe him as respectful and responsible. He is one of the most dedicated people I have the pleasure of knowing. Ever since the start of high school though, Jiayi has been a joke. He's been the joke of the RM SGA and he's been the joke of our school.

I don't think a couple of rumors should detract from all the work Tim has done. It's really shameful for me to see this kind of behavior from MCPS students. I think that this election should be about who knows what the heck they're doing and clearly Tim shows that.

To those of you who said that Jiayi was being serious? What are his 5 biggest weaknesses that would hinder him from being a SMOB. Please enlighten me. How about the fact that jiayi is using his position as RM Treasurer (running for reelection at the same time he's running for SMOB) as a safety net? You don't think THAT's for his college resume?

    • kid on April 28, 2009 at 7:52 PM
Jiayi's not running for SGA treasurer anymore... And Alex Blocker, who ran against Q, also ran for SGA president at the same time...
    • re: chemman92 on April 28, 2009 at 7:53 PM
"Jiayi has been a joke. He's been the joke of the RM SGA and he's been the joke of our school." What a statement. You obviously don't even know what has gone on in the SGA and what a joke you are.

Please be a little more educated. Jiayi is NOT running for SGA Treasurer. Jiayi WAS SGA Treasurer.

As a member of RM's SGA, I can attest to Jiayi's commitment to SGA. Jiayi gave up one of his elective classes to be in Student Leadership all year and works everyday with the President and SGA Advisor on EVERYTHING that goes on. Next to Emily, Jiayi is the most dedicated and hardest working SGA officer.

      You are ridiculous and ignorant.

  • Blair HS on April 28, 2009 at 5:31 PM
Ok guys, SMOB is all about who can get the job done. Based on what I just read, Tim is obviously better qualified, and will be able to get things done.
As I've been in contact with past SMOB's, ideas and aspirations only go so far. I honestly believe that Tim can get things done better than Jiayi.
The SMOB needs to be able to think at the same level as other Members on the Board, but put a student perspective into the debates and decision making.
I really hope Tim can get into office, stay in touch with the students, and get things done on the Board.
    • ... on April 29, 2009 at 7:50 PM
how can Tim put a student perspective into debates and stay in touch with students when
      a) he is not a typical student obviously and
      b) he has no social skills?
  • blazer09 on April 28, 2009 at 5:47 PM
100% jiayi. "Re: Jayne, chemman92" is right. it is not at all "pretty obvious that Jiayi doesn't care," he answered the joke questions with jokes. he also answered the serious questions seriously.

honestly after reviewing the voter guides, jiayi doesn't lack know-how or experience. tim's "experience" is a bunch of bs. "non-profit organization?" opfly is bs. everyone who is really in on opfly knows that. "founder, president, chairman..." it sounds awesome and impressive on the outside, but if you know tim, he really is doing it for the resume. take his winning the "bentley tomorrow25" contest. he applied to win a stupid award honoring his "leadership." pretty obvious to me he is only out for positions, awards, and empty titles.
    • 123 on April 28, 2009 at 11:21 PM

are you serious? YOU SHOULD GET KICKED OUT OF OPFLY! Im in opfly too. i guess you just don't participate enough. do you think Tim would seriously be selfish enough to spend it all. NO. HIS PARENTS SPEND THE MONEY. HE SPENDS HIS OWN MONEY FOR SMOB. NOT THE OPFLY MONEY. So unethical. if you don't know the facts, then don't say anything and stop spreading these rumors about Tim. He's a good CEO and he spends all the money from fundraisers for buying supplies for the homeless, renting the room for the opfly meetings and providing scholarships. so please, just because you're not the CEO of this amazing company, don't start making all of these things up. get your facts straight. and do you know how much time Tim spent on SMOB and trying to be the best candidate he could be? more than jiayi, who just spent all his time prancing around doing NOTHING. although Tim may be busy, he cares about everyone, he cares about the issues, i KNOW he will change the MCPS system so that it appeals to us better.

How pretentious do you get, Tim Hwang? You're not Barack Obama, and you're not Bill Gates. All I see is proof that you are neither down-to-earth, nor personable. You might as well be a robot quoting some handbook of political correctness.

I want a SMOB I can relate to, not one who's just running to add another position to his fluffed up resume.

When Jiayi and Tim both visited Blair, Jiayi demolished Tim. He wasn't very good in the SMOB video, but he was probably just nervous. In person Jiayi was charming and gave a better impression than Tim did during his speech and Q&A (at the house meeting). Tim wouldn't stop talking about how many congresspeople he knew and how he was best friends with Barack Obama. Jiayi was actually passionate about working for the students and came off as knowledgeable yet relatable. If everyone could have been there, Jiayi would have Blair's vote.

  • re: will vote on April 28, 2009 at 7:36 PM
It's true that you shouldn't think about "someone who would be cool to party with on the weekends when you go to vote," but if you're voting for someone who is going to REPRESENT you, he'd better be like you. He'd better know what it's like to be a student, how students feel and what students care about.

When you vote for someone like Tim, you'll vote for someone who spends all his time with "politicians" and "forming organizations" and who takes most of his classes outside of school and at that, hardly ever goes to school due to all his other "commitments." Don't even get me started on whether Tim will be a good SMOB with all he's doing (read this)

"I've served as the CEO/President of my own non-profit organization with over 200 employees worldwide, over 500 volunteers and an expansive budget. I also serve as the National Director of Operations and Development for a political consulting firm and a coordinator for numerous political campaigns." WHILE BEING THE SMOB? REALLY?

Anyway, Tim is nothing like your average student in Montgomery County. Jiayi is closer. I'm voting Jiayi because if you're going to elect someone to represent thousands of students, he'd better be like a student too.
    • Concerned on April 28, 2009 at 9:04 PM
"Anyway, Tim is nothing like your average student in Montgomery County. Jiayi is closer. I'm voting Jiayi because if you're going to elect someone to represent thousands of students, he'd better be like a student too."

      Very good.

I admit, I haven't met Jiayi in person. But when I met Tim at the most recent NHS meeting, he seemed to just be in a hurry to get away as fast as possible. Good intentions, sure, but I'd rather a candidate not visit rather than rush in to drop in a vote-for-me speech and not to open it up to questions.

Also, take a look at their websites. Whatever fluff both candidates may have, they also have real experience. But I'm disappointed that Tim feels the need to ride on Obama's coattails.
  • undecided on April 28, 2009 at 7:57 PM
tim did do better in the video, but i agree with house of representatives. when i met tim and jiayi in person, jiayi came off as just as passionate and more friendly and educated. so maybe he was nervous.
  • anon on April 28, 2009 at 8:15 PM
So in a nutshell, Tim is appealing to the adults and the so called serious students, whilst Jiayi appeals to those not in the first group.

Ah well, I think it's a shame that the highest position a student can get goes to a jokester (pirates, jumping off buses, and ninja cockroaches anyone?), but since SMOB really doesn't have much power...

We'll see how things go tomorrow.

    I'M VOTING JIAYI!
  • re: chemman92 (RM kid) on April 28, 2009 at 9:22 PM
Wow, you are so misinformed. First of all, as someone who is a part of the RM SGA, he is not a joke and everyone knows that he always works hard. Everyone in the SGA loves him and the sponsor is obsessed.

Second, he is NOT running for reelection as SGA Treasurer. He was going to, because he couldn't bear the thought of not being involved in SGA at all next year if he loses SMOB, but he dropped out of the race because SMOB takes precedence and campaigning was too large of a time commitment.

Third, what are these "rumors" of which you speak? And what is this irreponsible behavior? Please, enlighten us.

There's a big difference between being a joke and having a sense of humor. Jiayi applies to the latter. He has always taken school seriously and he clearly takes SMOB seriously. He's sacrificing IB for this. This is not to be taken lightly. Would Tim sacrifice all of his super duper political activities for the post? I'm not so sure.

For the last time, Jiayi was only funny in the non-serious answers, unlike robot Tim who tried to tie everything into SMOB when it was a fun/fluff question.

Please everyone vote for Jiayi. He really cares about making the county better and has a way more realistic agenda for next year. He knows that SMOB is not President of the United States and knows that he's not starting some sort of political revolution with this campaign. He simply wants to keep everyone as involved as possible and advocate for the average student.

Tim's "political activities" seem more like surprisingly transparent attempts to build his resume than genuine concern with the problems of the student populace. He's certainly got drive, though.
  • wowwwww on April 28, 2009 at 11:07 PM
Tim, you copy Barack Obama's website. You talk about leading a movement. You are not a politician. You are a candidate for SMOB.

The way you've conducted your campaign only shows me that you lack common sense. How do you represent the students of Montgomery County when you can't relate to them?

You've said it yourself, in this interview. One of your weaknesses is that you haven't participated in school-sponsored events, because you're too busy flying around the country. I'm sorry, but if you've suddenly put aside your ambitions to take an interest in MCPS, you might not want to start by running for SMOB.

It just looks like SMOB would be another line on your college resume.

  • hey this lets me procrastinate on physics on April 28, 2009 at 11:38 PM
hmm i think the intention of this little interview done by blair was to review the personalities of the two candidates instead of getting them to answer the way they would for formal televised interviews.
questions like "what animal would you want to be" shouldn't have the answer of "On the surface tigers are defensive, fierce and assertive animals but on the inside they are humbling, noble and judicious exactly the qualities that I would like to exhibit for the students of Montgomery County if elected as Student Member of the Board."
i just don't think they meant for it to be connected to smob...the question was directed to reveal personality.
while jiayi seemed a little too silly, he did well in letting everyone know who he was.
i think answering a question like a robot only conveys to others that you only care about the votes and issues, and not the people themselves because you can't relate.
  • Me on April 28, 2009 at 11:43 PM
People are taking this Q+A too seriously. This was something written for the Blair school newspaper, nothing "official" at all about it. Jiayi clearly captured the mood of the questions better than Tim did in his answers. None of this is representative of how the candidate will perform in office, but rather a humorous piece that let's us get to know them a little better personally.

    Voting Jiayi :)
  • Aww on April 29, 2009 at 2:14 AM
Gosh darnit! If only I had read this before I voted. Jiayi had me at Britney. But this article really affirms everything I thought about them; Tim Hwang is an overachieving robot who will probably one day rule the world with iron, totalitarian fists, and Jiayi is a friendly normal guy. I figured Hwang's drive would get stuff done, but with his schedule, will he even have time to be SMOB? He really is excessive, it's mildly creepy. I really regret my vote.
  • really blazers? on April 29, 2009 at 12:22 PM
you guys are calling tim a snob because hes the only guy who gave real answers to the questions?

i think the answers to the first question say it all. tim has an incredible wealth of experience, through which he has proven his capacity to lead. he has a knowledge of and an involvement in Montgomery County that goes beyond anyone i have ever met.
    Jiayi has...
    ...
modesty? i see a list of unsubstantiated, unquantifiable character traits that Tim has too.

really, Jiayi seems like a nice guy. i'd probably rather have a drink with Jiayi than with Tim. but remember, i'd also probably rather have a drink with George W. Bush than with John Kerry. that didn't make George W. Bush more qualified to be in a position of leadership. blazers, be honest with yourselves. which of these two men knows more about the issues gripping our county? who has proven their mettle by serving us in positions of leadership, advocating for us over the past several years? not jiayi.
    • Sec'10 on April 30, 2009 at 5:39 PM
Just because Tim seems to have been more involved "over the past several years" doesn't mean Jiayi would do anything less than Tim.

It's beside the point now anyways since Tim is now SMOB.
  • voter on April 29, 2009 at 4:41 PM

  • mgirl (View Email) on April 29, 2009 at 10:42 PM
i can see both sides to this; basically:
    a. tim has more experience and is an overachiever; i think he does take his job seriously, and i just think that he has a strong passion for what he is doing, which is why he may come off as being too serious. Also, he has said that he doesn't do that many extracurriculars, which worries me a bit. He may also be responding in this serious matter due to the fact that many people have been saying the SMOB doesnt really do anything, which i could imagine annoys him.
    b. jiayi seems to be serious when he needs to be, and funny when he needs to be. However, compared with tim, he obviously has a lesser record of participation. if i were to know jiayi in person, that would def help. everyone needs to start somewhere, and this would be a great place to start. unfortunately, he did not win, and i was really torn between my vote.

personally, I know both of these candidates. both jiayi and tim, and i have to say, tim is not some robot with no personality, he actually cares about the issues. jiayi just took this whole thing as a joke.. and look at him answers compared to tim;s. Tim actually thought of what he was going to say, while jiayi just wrong "stuff". this is not someone i would want as a SMOB. i would want someone who can actually take this seriously and hep us. And yea, jiayi may be cool, be he has no experience whatsoever. what captain of the drumline and black belt in taekwon do... oh and middle school SGA president? thats NOT experience, Tim has so many more qualifications that Jiayi. Tim campaigned for donna edwards and many other congressmen and senators, he made a speech regarding the buses on creating a new metro line, where he got a standing ovation and offeres from many congressmen and senators begging him to intern for them, he made a nonprofit organization where hes helping the homeless, hes taking 15 AP's this year, and yet he still manages to take his time to think about SMOb and try to help the students out. During the video one of the things that stuck out to me the most was that he was talking about more descriptive things and he was talking more in depth of what he was going to do. If tim can be a CEO at 9th grade, im sure he can change MCPS and make it a better place for all. Jaiyi, im not so sure about.. hes just doesnt take things too seriously and he just.. has no experience to change anything. and i know not everybody can like tim, but still, hes not some senseless robot. he actually has a personalitly, he actually cares.

He didn't get onto the honor roll either because he does so many activities. And 26 APs by the end of senior year (on his Facebook)? You've got to be kidding me. I don't think he give up any of these activities.

OMG WHATS WORNG WITH YOU?! Don't insult people you don't even know! I can't believe you would bash someone because they're passionate for something...... That's just low - go attack his beliefs, go attack his policies, but don't use ad hominem and personal attacks for your own argument. If you're going to propose an argument do it right. I'd like to state for the record that Tim will be taking 3 classes next year. He's basically undercutting his entire senior year academic record to serve the students. He'll also be leaving his non-profit the next year turning the reigns over to one of his department heads - the rest of his time there will be devoted to training him. And he'll be giving up a lot of his political roles as a result of a COI. He was on the honor roll (not that it matters to obsessed stalkers like you) - in fact he's still maintained a 4.7 despite his busy schedule. You don't know Tim and you're an idiot so get your facts straight before you come on here and spread your lies. I'm actually really disappointed that our school would even put up people like you. People like you really should stop the mud-slinging because frankly its really not cool. Why don't you post with your real name? In other news, you jiayi supporters get over yourselves. Tim won so go support him. You're only hurting yourselves by bashing him.
