Civil War names in Takoma Park?

The city of Takoma Park is considering renaming streets that honor Union and Confederate Civil War figures. Grant, Sheridan, Sherman, General Lee and General Jackson avenues were debated on March 4th in a town hall meeting.

Blazers join Takoma Youth Council

This year, Takoma Park established a Youth Council in order to include young voices in city politics. Blair students comprise five out of the nine middle school to high school Youth Council members. Each member will serve a one-year term and will have the option to reapply at the end of their term.

High school students from all over Takoma Park registered to vote

In 2013, Takoma Park made history by becoming the first city to pass legislation giving 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote in local elections. Four years after the enactment of this instrumental policy, Blair students who live in Takoma could be seen arriving at the local community center, ready to cast their ballots on Nov. 7.

Swan Song and Frailboys perform in Takoma Park

Local Blair bands Swan Song and Frailboys headlined a concert at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) building in Takoma Park on Saturday night. The two headliners performed original, creative songs that had the jam-packed crowd reeling late into the night.

Old Town, new look

The Old Town Takoma Park businesses have seen a myriad of closings and openings over the past few months. New restaurants, stores and a hair salon are moving on to Carroll Ave., some of which have already opened up, replacing many long-standing businesses.

The Takoma Park Nature Lab, located on Carroll Avenue in Old Town Takoma Park, is now looking to expand opportunities for high school students through more programs and lab assistance.

NewsChips: 16 and 17 year-olds can vote in Takoma Park

Last Monday, the Takoma Park City Council voted 6-1 to allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in city elections starting in November. This is a great law modification that is sure to benefit the community.

Summer Delights closes

At the end of January, the Takoma Park ice cream shop Summer Delights closed. A new restaurant owned by Jeff Black will be built in the open space following the closing of Summer Delights.
