Northwestern HS counselor and basketball coach has died from the coronavirus


Terrance Burke, a counselor, Navy veteran, and basketball coach for Northwestern High School, passed away on March 27 as a result of COVID-19. He was 54 years old.

Terrance Burke passed away on Friday as a result of his symptoms

Burke's passing was announced in a statement from Prince George's County Public Schools Chief Education Officer Monica Goldson. "I know this news is devastating and shocking to many in the Northwestern High School community and all who knew and loved him. Please know that my heart is breaking with yours and I am praying for your strength and comfort during this time," Goldson said.

According to the Washington Post, he had a very healthy lifestyle, but he suffered from asthma. "He was strong. He was healthy. He worked out every day," Sydne Burke, Terrance's son, said to the Washington Post.

Burke is also known for his greatly positive effects on his students. "He really saved a lot of people and influenced a lot of people to get off the streets and play basketball." Arnetha Burke, Terrance's daughter, said to the Washington Post.

Burke's death marks the third death from the coronavirus in Prince George's County, Md. The county has seen 196 cases, three deaths, and zero recoveries. As of March 29, the coronavirus death toll in Maryland has risen to ten, with 1,068 confirmed cases.
