Traditional dishes for the Jewish New Year


As the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, fast approaches, it is important to find delicious dishes to start the year off right. Tradition often dictates the recipes that appear on the holiday dinner table. Sweet foods like noodle kugel are used to symbolize a sweet new year and apple cake's round shape represents the year circling to a close but never ending. Try these easy recipes to ring in the year 5768.

Noodle Kugel

Prep time is about 20 minutes. Makes about 6-8 servings.

Kitchenware:
- 1 9 by 9 baking pan
- 1 pot
- 1 large bowl
- 1 spoon
- measuring cups

Ingredients:
- 8 ozs. Medium egg noodles
- 1 lb. cottage cheese
- 1/2 pint of sour cream
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup raisins
- shredded orange peel

Preparation:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cook and drain noodles.
3. Mix together all of the ingredients in a large bowl.
4. Place the mixture into the greased baking pan.
5. Bake for 1 hour.
6. Let cool and enjoy!

Apple Cake

Prep time is about 30 minutes. Makes about 8-10 servings.

Kitchenware:
- 10 inch pie pan
- knife
- mixer
- 2 large bowls
- spoons
- measuring cups

Ingredients:
- 1/4 lb. and 3 tbsp. melted butter
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 cup sugar
- cinnamon and sugar mix
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 2 eggs
- sliced apples (approximately 3)
- chopped nuts

Preparation:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (325 degrees for a glass pan).
2. Beat together the sugar and 1/4 pound melted butter.
3. Add eggs and beat well.
4. In a separate bowl mix together all of the other dry ingredients except for the cinnamon sugar mixture.
5. Combine the wet and dry ingredients.
6. Add vanilla and blend well.
7. Place the batter into the greased pie pan.
8. Lay the sliced apples in concentric circles, overlapping slightly on top of the batter.
9. Sprinkle the apples with the cinnamon mixture, chopped nuts and 3 tablespoons melted margarine.
10. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.
11. Let cool and enjoy!
