NELSON H. KOBREN MEMORIAL GYMANISUM, Jan. 6—
In a game that had all the early makings of a David vs. Goliath-like upset, the result of the Blair junior varsity boys' basketball game against Sherwood was one that was, by many, expected. Despite an impressive start, Blair eventually fell for the first time on their home turf, losing 55-44.
In the first half, Sherwood, coasting onto the court with a perfect record, appeared lost. Blair, aided by the hot hand of guard Quentin Snively (16 points) capitalized on Sherwood's turnover and entered the second quarter with a 13-12 lead and a new wave of confidence. They maintained their lead throughout the rest of the first half, setting the stage for the first win of the season.
However, the team came crashing back to earth in the second half. Sherwood marched back from their locker rooms with new energy and proceeded to score 15 of the first 16 points in the half, while Blair's offense stagnated completely.
Coach Emanuel Charles primarily attributed the loss to the lagging offense during the second half. "We didn't execute our offense. We didn't get any fast-break points. We couldn't run with them," he said. "If we're not able to do that, we've got problems."
Blair, which had led by one heading to halftime, was down by 13 at the end of the third quarter, 39-26, having managed to score only four points in the third quarter. And in the final period, Blair only came within seven points of Sherwood.
Blair, 4-3 on the season, heads to Magruder on Monday, Jan. 9.
