JAN. 6, NELSON H. KOBREN MEMORIAL GYMNASIUM—

The junior varsity girls' basketball team (2-5) won 35-31 in overtime against Sherwood, bringing an end to their four-game losing streak.

In an intense battle, freshman Krystal Milburn banked the lay-up that tied the game in the last five seconds of regulation play. Right before Milburn made her key shot, officials had called an out-of-bounds violation on Sherwood, with the score at 26-28. The ball was turned over to the Blazers, who immediately called a time-out with less than twenty seconds left in the game. Coming in from the time-out, the Blazers were able to effectively drive pass Sherwood's defense and tie the game.

Before the end of the fourth quarter, the Blazers had not gained a lead since the opening minutes of the game. A dry spell for both teams ran from the end of the first quarter well into the second quarter, lasting for over seven minutes, despite a number of attempted shots on both sides. This resulted in the meager 6-11 score at the half.
By the end of the third quarter, the Blazers trailed by just one point.

In overtime, Sherwood briefly tied the game at 31-31, but Milburn's two lay-ups secured the win for the Blazers.

Elated with their win, Captain Molly Martinez said she was proud of the team's resolve. "We won because we didn't get discouraged and instead focused on the game and winning," she said.

The Blazers next play at Magruder on Monday, January 9, at 3:30.
