On Wed. May 1, Blair HERStory: the Love Yourself Club sponsored by Neferisha Johnson hosted a comedy discussion in the media center with comedian Pierre Edwards to inform students on the benefits of laughter. Edwards first spoke about his experience in acting and comedy, which spans from notable movies like “For Da Love of Money” to “Def Jam’s How to Be a Player.” The discussion was initially planned to coordinate a panel but with two other panelists absent decided to continue with Edwards. She later awarded Edwards the Wellness and Joy Award for his commitment to improving mental health with a laugh.

In his message to students Edwards emphasized the importance of believing in oneself. Growing up Edwards always knew he wanted to pursue a career in entertainment but was discouraged by people in his family. In particular, his father was strongly against his decision to become a comedian and wanted him to work in the military. He mentioned that when coming home late from performing at comedy shows, he would be met with a chain locked to his door that his father had put to keep him from pursuing comedy. Despite his father’s attempts, Edwards' followed his passion and became a comedian. To end his talk, Edwards asked students about their career choices and encouraged them to always stay committed to their dreams.
