The showcase provided an opportunity for students to experience the moving performances of Sankofa for Black History Month
On Friday, Feb. 24, Montgomery Blair High School held the Sankofa Showcase in the Media Center during lunch. The showcase featured five performances from the Sankofa program and lasted 45 minutes. Sankofa and the media center also held a raffle for the book Victory. Stand!: Raising My Fist for Justice.
Sankofa performed four songs and one poem during the showcase. A group of eight vocalists performed the first song, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by James Weldon Johnson, was performed by a group of eight vocalists. The song was followed by a performance of the poem "Family Jewels" by Andre Parker (originally written by Essex Hemphill). The poem was followed by the songs “Lift Me Up” by Rihanna, “Blue Lights” by Jorja Smith and “Stand Up” by Cynthia Erico. “Stand Up” was choreographed by Skye Sibrian and Qari Headley. Sibrian also was one of the codirectors of Sankofa.
