Girls lax takes early lead and controls game

MAY 4, BLAZER STADIUM—

The girls' lacrosse team beat out the Kennedy Cavaliers tonight in a fast-paced, high scoring game to pick up their fourth win of the season. The Blazers took control with early goals by juniors Rachita Sood and Helen Anderson, and stayed comfortably ahead for the remainder of the match.

Each team fought hard to maintain possession however, with a lot of back-and-forth, offensively oriented play. The Blazers pulled away near the end of the second half, with additional goals by seniors Elena Talbott and Devon Madison, as well as Sood and sophomore Susie Branson. Kennedy struggled to break through the Blair defenders, but were able to score twice in the final two minutes of the half to bring the score to 7-3.

The Cavaliers kicked it into gear for the second half, dominating possession and scoring twice more in the opening minutes before a Blair timeout was called. The Blazers came back revitalized, and took back control when Talbott made an over-the-shoulder catch from junior Lizzie Horne, was fouled in the box, and still managed to score, stretching the Blair lead to 8-5.

Kennedy came right back after the draw with a breakaway goal, but Talbott and Madison each scored in the ensuing minutes to bring the score to 10-6. The teams traded possession up and down the field for the next several minutes, but near the end of the game the Cavaliers renewed their assault on goal, scoring twice more. The Blair defense held though, and time ran out before Kennedy could catch up.

The win was a critical morale boost for the Blair team, coming off of a difficult 1-7 stretch, and they were ecstatic to win their last home game of the season. "It was amazing to win on Senior Night. I'm excited for the sophomores and juniors to step up and be great next year," said senior captain Karla Berberich.
