First annual film festival to be held at Silver Spring Stage

Blair Network Communications (BNC) is hosting the first BNC Media Festival Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Silver Spring Stage in the Woodmoor Shopping Center. The Media Festival will begin at 7 p.m. and end around 9 p.m. Admission is free for participants and $3 for the general public.

Blazers submitted 10 minute videos for the festival in the following categories: commercial/public service announcement, comedy, drama, horror and music video. Videos in a sixth category, documentaries, were allowed to be up to 15 minutes long. A winner in each category and an overall winner will be selected. The overall winner will receive a gift card. Three Blair teachers, Paul Irvin, Lauren Nestuk and Kenneth Smith, will assist in judging the contest on the guidelines of content, production quality and characterization.

According to BNC production executive direction Gavin La, knowledge of the BNC Media Festival is beyond Blair, or even Maryland. A group of high school students from Douglas County, Colorado were writing an article on BNC when they contacted Shay Taylor, an advisor for BNC. She urged them to enter to enter the festival, which they did.

La said that the Colorado students' submission is representative of how successful the BNC program is. "That's really big. We're starting to become really well-known."

The Silver Spring Stage is located in the Woodmoor Shopping Center next to CVS, at 10145 Colesville Road.
