The father of building services worker Marisol Cortez, who was recently featured in "Marisol Cortez: pursuing an American dream," died of cancer on Wednesday, April 27.

Juan Cortez, 89, suffered heart failure after throat cancer caused him to suffocate, said Marisol Cortez. He had cancer for several years but was only diagnosed a year ago, she said. He was living with his wife and a son in El Salvador.

Though Marisol Cortez misses her father, she takes comfort in knowing that he no longer suffers from his condition. "Now he's resting. I know that he's with God, and I know that he has no pain," she said.

Marisol Cortez, along with her brother and two sisters in the U.S., hopes to persuade her mother to move here so that they can help each other move on. "Life continues," she said. "I still have my mother, and I'm going to take care of her."
