Some members commit alcohol violation

The following information is compiled from the article by Charlotte Tucker titled "Girls' soccer forced to forfeit" in The Gazette.

The girls' varsity soccer team at Winston Churchill High School was forced to forfeit its first two games of the 12-game season after several team members were caught drinking at a party that occurred on Friday, Aug. 27, according to the coach, Haroot Hakopian.

County officials are not releasing details about the party, but the incident resulted in a 10-day suspension of team practice. According to Hakopian, most but not all of the team was present at the party, which violated the team's no drinking policy that all members are required to sign before participating in school sports.

Hakopian was especially disappointed because of the promise shown by the team early on in the season. "This is the best team I've ever had, which is what makes this even more disappointing," he said as quoted in The Gazette.

Churchill's first game will now be on Saturday, Sept. 18 against Sherwood High School.
