Infections of the earlobe caused by ear piercing can result in disfigurement of the ear, according to a news summary from The Washington Post.

According to a new study, pierced earlobes are more likely to get infected than other ear cartilage. Such areas may dissolve, causing the ear to collapse.

Employees of jewelry shops may spread infection though the contamination of piercing equipment. Bottles containing disinfectant substances may also hold bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, reported the Post.
