Former DIVA talks

I am a former and original DIVA. On Oct 8, I was informed by Jalima Caulker, also a former and original DIVA, that DIVAs were no longer allowed to perform during pep rallies. No words can express our anger, shock and sorrow. We worked so hard to become part of Blair's club and athletic communities. I was the first president of the DIVA organization. I personally attended meetings and did paperwork to have us integrated into the school's programs.

Before DIVAs, there was the drill team. Then, for a reason that I don‘t know, the drill team was no more. The initial motive for DIVAs was to bring back drill team spirit to the pep rallies. Cheerleaders cheered us up, poms pumped us up, and the DIVAs ended it with a bang. It was climactic.

When doing outside performances, DIVAs do their best to represent themselves, as well as Blair, in a positive light. Each competition that DIVAs attended in our sister county, Prince George's, allowed us to gain more respect from others. We won these competitions, and we were coming from a county where we were the only dance team. We have paved paths and opened doors for many dancers in other schools, because now they too can have a dance team. And they are doing so.

There is always an excitement and adrenaline rush before hitting the stage. But there is no rush better than that from performing in front of your Blazer classmates.

The students that are part of this organization are Diverse, Intelligent, Versatile and Athletic. A note to the DIVAs: you are all diamonds in the rough, and you will shine through.
