SGR members participate in local Earth Day project
Students from SGR participated with community members in the Clip-the-Trees of English Ivy event that Friends of Sligo Creek(FoSC), a local environmental organization, organized last Saturday, April 24.
Sally Gagne, a member of FoSC who headed the project, called the event a success and specifically thanked the SGR members who came out. "I very much appreciated their helping," Gagne said. She added that there was no telling the exact number of participants, but she was pleased with the turnout. "When we publicize an Earth Day event widely, there's no way to judge how many people will show, so it's wonderful to have students who will help no matter what," said Gagne.
Out of the 180 ivied trees in the area of Sligo Creek Park between Colesville Road and Forest Glen Road, at least 75 percent are now ivy-free, Gagne estimated.
