Girls Tennis 3-0 over Sherwood before Postponement

The girls tennis team was clobbering their Sherwood rivals 3-0 when heavy rain forced the games to be postponed. Before the cancellation,
Blair crushed Sherwood with 3 consecutive 6-0 6-0 doubles victories, and a masterful 6-0 singles win by senior Julia Kay.

Both coach David Ngbea and the victorious Blazers contend that strong returns along with Sherwood's inconsistency were the main contributors
to Blair's triple ace wins. "[The members of the Sherwood team] weren't very consistent in terms of serves, and volleys," said senior
Stephanie Hernandez, who won one of the doubles' matches. "We hit the balls a lot harder."

The singles matches were dominated by Kay's 6-0 victory in which Kay combined power-packed returns with strategically placed shots to outplay her opponent and earn her sweeping victory.

Senior Vivian Wang's skillful overhead shots proved to be instrumental in creaming her opponent 6-1, 5-1 before the games were called off.

Ngbea attributes Wang's skills to her consistent strokes. "You really have to beat [Wang] to win," says Ngbea. "She doesn't make any errors."

The team's number 1 player Jennifer Alyono was determined to stay alive in a 3-6 1-4 match that Alyono hopes to conquer when the games
resume. Alyono's topspin forehand and speedy serves caught her opponent off-guard at times, but did not greatly affect the outcome of the sets.

Watching his girls swing and slap at the tennis balls, Ngbea smiled in disbelief as one of his top players Lisa Kim - who was being
slaughtered 1-6, 2-4- fell victim to her opponent. "I can't believe what [Kim's] doing," said Ngbea disappointedly. "She's doing nothing but pushing, nothing but pushing."

Despite Ngbea's mild discontent, the coach confidently assures that the teams' 0-1 record this year will improve to 1-1 by the next meet.
