Greenbury Logan was a black soldier who fought for Texan independence in the Battle of Concepción and the siege of Bexar. Born into slavery in 1799, Logan was eventually freed by his white father, David Logan. He then moved to Mississippi, where he married Judah Duncan, with whom he had five children.
One of the first black settlers in Texas, Logan enlisted in the Texas army on Oct. 7, 1835. He fought in various battles, and during the siege of Bexar, his right arm was crippled. Even so, he continued to devote his life to establishing a strong Texas settlement. He even turned a residence in Brazoria that had been purchased in 1836 into a boarding house for the new Texan Congress. Logan died in 1880.
