Blair students have opportunity to help less fortunate


Blair students can give donations and volunteer at various organizations in Montgomery County to help the less fortunate this holiday season. The following information is compiled from the November 27 issue of The Washington Post Montgomery Extra.

Community Companions Program

The organization is asking for new toys, video games, nonperishable food and furniture for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. It is located at 1010 Grandin Avenue in Rockville and is open from 2 to 6 p.m. weekdays. Call the above number to arrange a delivery time for donations. Friends of the Library

The group is asking for new books to be donated for elementary and middle school children. Contributions can be delivered at 99 Maryland Avenue in Rockville from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Hearts and Homes for Youth Inc.

The organization is asking for clothing, books, compact disc players, gift certificates and sports equipment. Donations can be dropped off at 1320 Fenwick Lane, Suite 800 in Silver Spring from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. To arrange for a pickup of large donations, call the above number. Life Skills Workshop Inc.

The group is asking for 75 $25 gift certificates as well as for volunteers to help at the yearly holiday reunion for women who are recovering from an addiction, mental illness or financial problem. This organization is asking for personal grooming items, liquid soap, dental supplies, playing cards, games, scarves, hats, gloves, sweaters and small radios for people with mental illnesses. The holidays gifts should be unwrapped and in unbreakable containers. National Center for Children and Families

This organization is asking for contributions of unwrapped gifts, such as art supplies, sporting goods, board games, action figures, disposable cameras and gift certificates for children. Presents should be dropped off at 6301 Greentree Road in Bethesda from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. by December 15. Rockville Holiday Drive 2003

The group is asking for monetary donations as well as for new and unwrapped toys. During business hours, contributions can be deposited at the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services located at 32 Courthouse Square, at the Rockville Senior Center located at 1150 Carnation Drive or on the back porch of the Glenview Mansion located on Baltimore Road and Edmonston Drive. After 5 p.m. and on weekends, donations will be collected at the Rockville police station at City Hall located at 111 Maryland Avenue. Checks should be made payable to the Rockville Holiday Drive Fund and sent to the following address: Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, Rockville Holiday Drive, 32 Courthouse Square, Rockville, MD 20850.

The organization is asking for toys and gift certificates for children between the ages of one and seventeen.
