Flexible schedule makes courses more feasible

MCPS is offering an online version of both its SAT Prep Course and its Comprehensive Health Education Course for the Student Online Learning (SOL) program. The online format of the courses allows enrolled students to work at their own convenience.

The two courses give the same high school credit as the in-class courses offered and are taught electronically "by highly qualified MCPS teachers," according to MCPS' summer school brochure, Regional Sumer Scool Program 2005. The teachers are able to "conduct classes, give assignements, answer questions, lead discussions, designate grades, and commmunicate course content and student progress to parents," the brochure said.

MCPS recommends that students spend five hours or more per day on the class during the four-week course. "Because of the nature of online learning, these hours could be spread throughout the day and done when it fits the student's schedule," the brochure explained.

While most of the classes are taught online, students must attend three face-to-face sesions for both the SAT Prep Online Course and the Comprehensive Health Education Online Course.

The online courses were piloted last summer and the Health course was especially popular.
