NCAA analysis: Chicago Region

The Chicago Region is led by the no. 1 seed overall, Illinois, who had a nearly flawless season loosing only once late in the season. However, Oklahoma State is a team that was a contender for a no. 1 seed and could've been named one if the Big 12 championship had been played after the selection was made. Despite being the top-seed, Illinois was placed in the region with possibly the strongest no.2 seed. Also, Arizona and Boston College had been earlier candidates for no. 1 seeds until both teams suffered a couple of key losses. Arizona is lead by talented guard Salim Stoudamire who is averaging 18.2 points per game and is an excellent outside shooter and defender. Alabama the no. 5 seed in the region has the potential to be a season spoiler and is one of the sleepers in the region. Last year the Crimson Tide made it to the elite eight and have a talented combination of guards and big-men.

LSU seeded no.6 also has the potential to cause some problems but should have their hands filled against UAB in the first round in what should be a fast-paced game. However, the best first round match ups may be between no. 8 Texas and no. 9 Nevada and no. 7 Southern Illinois and no. 10 Saint Mary's. Both Texas and Nevada are talented teams but Texas lost standout guard P.J. Tucker to academics. Saint Mary's has the potential to upset Southern Illinois but will have to battle a home crowd supporting Southern Illinois. Another potential upset maybe Milwaukee-Wisconsin over Alabama, however if Alabama plays up to potential they should advance.

Illinois is favored to win the region however Arizona, Alabama and Oklahoma State could all be a test for Illinois and contend for a final four spot. Illinois should ease through to the sweet 16 and get passed either Boston College or Alabama. However, the big test could come for them in the Elite Eight where Oklahoma State should advance and give Illinois a run for their money.
