2006 fair to feature pig races and monster truck rides
Planning and set-up has begun for the annual Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, which will be held from Aug. 11 to Aug. 19 on the Montgomery County fairgrounds in Gaithersburg.
According to Rita Wigle, a representative with the Montgomery County Agricultural Center, Inc., the fair will continue to feature a carnival section (with a midway-theme and different rides and games) and an agricultural section (with animal petting, shows, and races) from previous years.
In addition to the annual carnival and agricultural sections, the 2006 fair will host some new attractions. Kathy Shepard, the receptionist and Data Entry Coordinator for the Montgomery County Agricultural Center, Inc. cited that this year's fair will have "more big rides" because a new company will be organizing the midway area, for the first time in 20 years. Featured are bumper cars, a zero-gravity attraction, a haunted house and other rides for kids and adults. Free trolley rides will be available for transporting patrons around the fairgrounds.
Shepard also stated that bingo is returning to the fair for the first time in "many years." In addition, there will be a tractor pull (in which tractors compete to pull the most weight) and a celebrity DJ derby featuring the radio station DC 101's DJ Flounder.
The agricultural fair will also have several contests in categories ranging from animal breeding (showmanship or competition) to arts and crafts to baking or vegetable and fruit growing competitions, according to the fair web site. The winners of these contests will be announced on Aug. 19, the last day at the fair. Registration forms for the contests are found on the web site and entries can be submitted until 8 a.m. on July 25.
Like previous years, the fair will have many "special days" with special events and discounts.
The Montgomery County Agricultural fair will be held from Aug. 11-19 on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, located on Perry Parkway in Gaithersburg, MD (close to Lakeforest Mall and behind Gaithersburg Square Shopping Center). Admission for the fair will be $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 2-7 and free entrance for children under age 2. Season passes can also be bought for $45 a person, and they will include parking fees (normally $5/car). The fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 12 midnight. For added convenience, shuttle buses will run from Lakeforest Mall to the fair from 7 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., or take the Red Line to the Shady Grove station and take the 55 or 59 bus which stop within a block of the fairgrounds. For a schedule of events and attractions as well as detailed directions and other information, call (301) 926-3100 or (301) 963-FAIR, e-mail info@mcagfair.com or visit their web site.
