Organization holds first senate meeting

The first SGA Senate meeting of the year was held today during fourth period. The Senate decided on the homecoming theme and debated other issues.

President Sebastian Johnson introduced the new senators to the powers and limitations of, as well as the protocol for, the SGA. Directly afterwards, the senate discussed the budget for homecoming.

The SGA's prepared budget is for $8,325, but the SGA only expects to raise $8,000. Because the SGA's projected expenditures are $325 over their expected profits, Chief Financial Officer Barun Aryal proposed allotting $2,000 for homecoming. Homecoming Coordinator Shewit Woldu requested an additional $1,000 based on the $3,000 that the SGA spent last year on the dance. This money will be used to pay for building services during the dance ($1,000) and for the DJ ($800), food, decorations and pep rally, which is scheduled to be held Oct. 8.

Due to a misunderstanding of senate terms and procedures, these budget issues were tabled until the next meeting, which will take place after school some time before homecoming.

The senate then chose the homecoming theme "vacation spots." The other options presented by Woldu were "reality shows," "moonlight and roses" and "Paris nights." The senate also passed a resolution to allow the formation of a committee to rewrite the SGA Constitution.
